Is it normal for the outside tread blocks to start rounding on both outside front tires only?

Tire Info:

Firestone Destination A/T's [235/70/16]

Inflated to 40 PSI and verified with Chalk test for proper inflation

Alignment done every two years - never out of spec

Stock suspension with 70K miles on the odometer

Edit: Will rotate tonight when I get home... The rears are still square... (a sign of not enough tire rotation?)

how many miles on the rotation? Plus you do a lot of in town type driving so its pretty normal, due to all the turns you take for the outside to wear faster, should rotate every 3 to 4,000 just to keep them wearing right and then still they will start to wear more.

Ah... I'm on a 6K/9K schedule right now.

I've been thinking about it all morning and kind of figured it was more of my lazyness eating away at my tires than a problem with the Jeep.

what rotation pattern are you using? You say the backs are still square so I am confused as a normal rotation would have all the tires sharing the load back and front at one time or another and should wear evenly.

I was doing a front to back rotation. I've had the tires since ~February 2007 so they are only 1 year old.

I'll switch the fronts out again and watch to see what happens. Maybe it's just normal wear for these tires? [pictures maybe tomorrow morning of the suspect problem]

Tie Rods are fine. I spent all day Saturday crawling around the Jeep looking at things and couldn't determine the cause. I think the root of this problem was an improper rotation schedule on my behalf.

I'll keep a closer eye on things and update this thread as time 'wears' on.

It could also be your driving style/habits. If you're taking turns hard the tire is going to roll a little bit and ride harder on the outside edges of the front tires. Have you noticed the same issues in the rear tires but slightly less? I have the same tires one size wider but I've only had them on for about 2,000 (love 'em) and so far they are wearing normal.

If that's not it make sure the place doing your alignment also checked the "toe" measurement (I think that's the right term.) Its the measurement of the tires not left to right but straight up and down. If that's not to spec it's possible your front wheels are just riding a bit on their outside edges ("toed out" I think is what they would call that.) I had mine done at a firestone dealer when they put the tires on and they checked everything with a laser beam system and then checked that off of the manufactures recommended specs. They told me that each car is going to have varying degrees of natural sag in the springs which will effect the ride height as well as the toe. As a result they use the manufacture's specs as a guild and use the laser system to tune everything.

actualy toe is left to right camber is up and down. Liberty's are as easy as turning a bolt to adjust camber so any alignment shop doing thier job will adjust it. Ask for a print out of the aligment specs.

I've had a pull ever since mine was new, I adjusted the camber so it was cambered in more than the factory pref. and I also toed it in a touch more than factory pref. Mine drives straight as an arrow now.

The factory ST's where worn on both edges like you speak off and my bfg a/t's where doing it aswell.

I do a 5tire rotation on mine at every oil change (you need to rotate a tire with open shoulder more than an allseason tire)
I'll keep an eye on the bfg's and see fi my alingment "guessing" fixed the problem.

It's a driving style thing, happens on the front from turning. They wouldn't give you an alignment if your tie-rods were out, or if anything has play in the suspension or steering. They're supposed to check that before they align just to make sure everything will hold, otherwise they'll say they can do the alignment but that they can't guarantee that it'll hold.
