No need, unless you have a hole/crack in your CV boots. If no grease is getting out no water is getting in,the OEM clamps are welded, and pretty tight and not very easy to remove. Then your stuck putting crappy clamps back on that you will never get back on as tight as the OEM ones, then your boots will slip off your joints all the time and sling grease everywhere.

Operating the CV's out of there operating angle's and time destroy's CV's more then sumerged under water for 3 hours.

Thanks for the heads up TJKJ, I put it up on the lift today and inspected the cv's pretty well. I didn't see any rips, tears, or holes. I also didn't see any grease. So I think they're fine. Its sitting at stock height, the angle is pretty straight across, so there's no extra strain on them.

Please invest in a good tow strap too. I see you walking w/ a chain in hand and that is potentially dangerous in a tugging/towing situation.

Love the shirt! Should have made it different colors in the pics.

There wasn't any fish in there, but I was a little afraid there might have been some snakes.

Don't worry, properly using a properly rated chain is just as safe as using a strap. Both a strap and a chain can be fatal if used imporperly.

Yea, I pulled it out with a come-a-long, the hook did come off the Jeep once and it just fell into the water. he ranger in the background tried to pull me out but it kept sliding around and not making any progress so we gave up on that pretty quickly.

I personally don't like to be in a recovery situation with anyone using a strap or chain with a big hook on the end. The thought it of slipping just doesn't do it for me.

We should use that shirt as the model for the LOST Safari shirts for Ouray next year.

I would much rather work w/ a strap in a recovery situation since a loop strap is much less likely to cause serious injury should it go flying. A chain or strap w/ a hook on the end is just asking for trouble and there is a reason that they are not allowed to be used on any trail ride I have ever been associated with.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and state that Most people would not have a clue how to verify the safety rating of a piece of chain and I doubt they would read the safety instructions that Didn't come w/ it.

You would be correct about many not knowing how to choose and use a chain properly.I don't personally condone the use of a chain but if used properly is safe. It's just like winch steel cable,it works very well if used properly, but synthetic rope is much more safe.

All the spinning is on the passenger side, she wasn't moving forward or back, 4 low Automatic 1st wasn't moving her anywhere. This wasn't my first time in the mud. Truth is she would've come out a lot easier going backward but due to the mud shelf I high centered on and no rear tow points I had nothing to secure the chain to.

Hooks are needed in certin situations are they not? A example I can think of is a tow package, and a shackle, you need a hook to grab on.

A rear hook, or shackle is not required if you have a hitch (tow pkg). A recovery strap fits inside the reciever with the hitch pin securing it. If you have to use a chain, put the hook onto the hitch where the safety tow chains go.

Makes sence, though I've only seen shackles on the hitch, never using the pin. I suppose the pin could hold the weight, but given the fact that there will be much more of a initial strain (harder jerking motion than just pulling a trailer) I would worry about it.

Why its the pin that is holding the shackle in place anyway...

Well, I guess I can go hide in my corner now  I guess the shackle only adds the quick and dirty aproach, you don't ahve to try and take the pin out, risk loosing it in mudy water, and put it back in, you can just attach and go with the hook+shackle. Of course, until it whips out and takes off your head

Just in case it's not clear: You don't have to use a hook with a shackle. The shackle pin comes out:
