Why its the pin that is holding the shackle in place anyway...

I'm no physicist and I could be wrong, but I believe a receiver shackle distributes the force more evenly. The receiver pin is bearing the weight either way, but if you're pulling using just the pin, you're concentrating all the pulling force on one part of the pin. With a reciever shackle, you're pulling on the entire pin.

Reciever Shackle: 2" wide shackle pulling on a 2" wide section of pin.

Strap only: 2" wide strap pulling on 2" wide section of pin.

Not a lot of difference there...

I think the big difference comes when pulling at any kind of an angle.

Th pin would be fine to use by itself with a strap. I prefer to use the shackle like the pic above, but if all you have is the pin and your hitch, it'd be fine. The tow hooks on our KJs work fine too, but I like the fact that the shackle is enclosed and you don't have to worry about it slipping off.

i would be VERY carefull when doing a recovery with a chain, we had a 4x4er die on a trail recently when a chain recovery went wrong,

the chain snapped he and his vehicle rolled down a 100 foot slope on a hill at an off road park

I feel your pain pal.

Just last Saturday I found myself in a similar situation though I didn't have water in the Jeep. As I was sitting in a large puddle I was trying to think of who to call for a tug or just how far I'd have to walk to find help. Luckily after some rocking back & forth I did escape my puddle. I need more aggressive tires before I try that puddle again.

How did you manage to fowl your engine? did you "splash" into the puddle? That will do it. Hopefully you'll be able to clean all the water damage out of your Libby.

Times like these don't you wish you had a winch?

If your going to wheel alone, highly do not recommend it,and in a area you have never been it is best to be outfitted as best you can. That means a good spare,as many spare parts you can think off, spare fluids, tools to do any repaires,a jack that will lift your vehicle, recovery points F/R,a good recovery strap, and a winch. It's amazing how $1000-$2000 spent on a winch and bumber/winch mount(like Detours backbone) will be amazinly worth it that one time you absolutly need it.Oh and a pullpal is a good idea also if your expecting no winch anchor points being around, another amazing product.

That's just super hard-core. Didn't even know something like that existed, or the need for it.

I was going to ask if your gf's sister was looking forward to the next off-road trip, but I see the photo of her is now MIA - So I am guessing the answer is no. :x

Oh I deleted from the source and forgot to put it back.....here yah go....Yea she is, she really enjoyed it.Image.

And yea my tires aren't nearly aggressive enough to hit the puddle again. I tried rocking the jeep back and forth and it moved a little but eventually dug itself deeper. The interior is now dry and will be steam cleaned tomorrow, so everything is fine there. I'm not really sure what happened to the motor, we were pushing her pretty hard and the CEL started blinking then it wouldn't accelerate and finally just died. But I gave it about an hour and then turned her back over and she cranked, and I haven't had any problems since so I think thats fine also.
