Speaking as an engineer (although unfortunately not one registered to pass 4wd modifications) I would measure track from the centreline of the tread because that is the centre of pressure of the tyre on the ground and hence the point around which the vehicle will tend to roll.

That's correct (as per RTA web site), but I did think it was as cmohr thought. However the RTA say's you only need it engineered if you go over the 24mm increase in track (grey area)  . My engineer said you can't go over bla bla bla

hey chris,
whats the url for that wording? if that's what they say then that means that you can have any track width you like as long as the car is engineered to support it safey??? (or that's how i understand it)...

and if that's the case then i'm definatley going to new rims with wider tyres on them....

can't wait to see how you go with all this....

cheers!

Stephen

FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARK now I'm pissed with the bloody 1st engineer, what a can't. The bloke that turned up today said it's fine, he told me that the 1st bloke is working under a trial piece of legislation. So Werner from TIC (Transport Industry Consultants) works under the current legislation and is happy with the KJ as it is. He's also not concerned about the rear side wall poking out by 10mm. In his words "It's only side wall and not tread, so don't worry about it".

So if you’re in NSW and want to get your KJ engineered then let me know so I can tell you who NOT to use, this f-wit has stuffed my holiday up and given me weeks of mega stress. Not to mention the cost bla bla bla..... time to get over it.

So, Werner will call me tomorrow and we will go from there but as of now he said it's all good. I will however hold my breath till I get the new mod plate.

Just make sure you have mud flapps on that cover the tyres a little, that seems to be one of the things the policee types get upset by.

They make you jump through some hoops down there to get the vehicles up to pass inspection huh?

At least everything turned out all right in the end, like you said, that is the important thing really.

Just got the 100% verbal from Werner, he's also going to put 31x10.5 on my new tyre placard + the 265/70/16 size :D . I get the new placards next week and will do another blue slip and rego change after that.

Then I will post some pic's of the mod plates if your interested.
