Has anyone put on manual locking hubs? Do you need to swap out the axle?

You would need to do a SFA swap, looking at about $8000-$25,000 to put lockouts on a KJ.

Oh it's not that bad,I have $16,000 in parts sitting in my apartment, getting ready for my SFA swap 8) ,it only took me about 2 years to get the parts I have already and only about $2000-$3000 more for the rest of the parts to complete.

Hmm, that may explain why I hated it too.

Always locked them in when you thought you may need them and then you were ready , I would still rather have them that way, wasn't hard at all to do!

I've always had pickups with them, Just got use to them. If I needed to I would just lock them.

Technically, aren't the hubs always locked on the KJ?

It is hard to get used too...... I loved the good ol days when I could just pull a handle and Go. I have actually pulled into 4LO and run through a tough section only to get hung up and Then realize I needed to jump out and spin the stupid hubs. So I actually drove through in 2LO....well at least it perfromed well in 2 LO up to where I got stuck. :?

Tom,I never found lock-outs hard to deal with, either.

Without locking hubs, you never disconnect the front driveline: you merely cut the power to it.
With lock-outs, you completely disconnect your front axles, diff, & driveshaft from turning & eliminate the wear on those components unless you are actually four-wheeling. This also eliminates the drag of pushing the un-powered front driveline when it is not in use. What effect this may have on fuel mileage probably varies from vehicle to vehicle.

When the need for 4 wheel drive was a possiblity, you just locked in your hubs & left the x-fer in 2 wheel drive. Now you are equal to those vehicles without locking hubs. Even the most basic x-fer, such as the Dana 20, can be shifted "on the fly."

Locking hubs went away becasue of a need for convenience. I still think that they, along with manually shifted x-fers and other such goods, are a better idea.
