New minivan (functional and good execution. But it is bland and out of style, not selling like the old glory days).

Yup, because the old minivans have always been exciting and caused a stirring in ones' loins.

I like the Avenger, personally. If I NEEDED a family sedan, that is.

Why has badge engineering killed Detroit? Honda's done it for a LONG time. IE Integra/Civic, Pilot/MDX, Accord/TL, ISUZU TROOPER/ACURA SLX, HONDA PASSPORT/ISUZU RODEO!!!

Toyota's done it for a long time too and successfully sold Cavaliers in Japan for a long time. Camry/ES250/300/330, et al.

Before passing judgement, lets just wait and see what happens.

The liberty is actually a uni-frame but the people that wrote that article are stupid none-the-less.

The Cherokee uses uni-body construction like most passenger cars. The net result is a very strong, lightweight body.

From someone who knows. However arrogant the person is, he's familiar with the situation.

So, having the GC as a uni-body is no different than what the Cherokee has always been.

Quote:
Like most small SUVs, Liberty follows the trend away from body-on-frame to unibody construction. Jeep calls it "uni-frame" because it's a beefed up unibody with frame-like reinforcement rails.
Just because Jeep calls it something else, doesn't mean it's really any different.

When you compare uni-body construction to uni-frame you do notice a difference in design.

i view the term "car-based" not to only mean uni-frame or independent suspension. the liberty is indeed uni-frame and does indeed ride on IFS as we all know. but, i would still consider it truck-based. when they say car based, i imagine a GC riding on a car chassis that has all the structural integrity of a dodge avenger or something.

any Jeep I was always told is not bought ...it's built!  so we take the crap they sell us and make it better! Youre going to see a lot of changes across the board as far as all mfgs. goes with fuel economy being number one reason to change, Hummers will change even, they all will.
Time to start stockpiling parts for older Jeeps and keep them running forever

If I look under our toyota corolla then look under my Jeep there is no comparison at all. The corolla hardly has a dent sticking down that you would consider a 'frame' if you wanted to call it that.

not necessarily. the charger/magnum/300C is a car platform and certainly has Hemi. IFS/IRS you are right about. Jeep would never discontinue having a 4x4 option.

I think the Hemi will probably not be avaliable on the GC, because of the higher MPG standard. That is the whole reason of going to a "car-based" GC. Better economy. As far as the 4x4 option, I should have been more specific and said 4LO. Probably go to one of them computer controlled AWD crap.

That's my guess.

Well I am a Toyota insider (at least I was in this time frame of the article) and I read what he wrote about the Rav4. It's true that this vehicle was a huge success; so much so that it actually doubled Toyota's income world-wide (that's alot of Rav4s sold). What he doesn't mention is that despite Toyota's success with the vehicle, the KJ outsold it and became the #1 selling vehicle in it's class. If it were true that Chrysler rushed to copy the Rav4 like everyone else, it's rare that a domestic would do a better job of it than the Japanese.

No matter how you look at it, the KJ was a huge success and much more versital than the benchmark Rav4. This article was probably written during the era when Cherokee fans saw the KJ as it's replacement when in actuality, it was Jeep's entry into a new market segment. In my opinion, they did it in a very Jeep way.

The Cherokee came before the Grand Cherokee, it would be the standard we are looking at here. My point is, the Original Cherokee was "car based" and worked well as a great Jeep. The new Grand Cherokee will be more "car based" as it will handle better and probably have even more 4x4 gadgets. (auto 4x4, traction control, uphill assist, downhill assist, leveling, etc...) Just like Land Rover. The overall point is, there's nothing to worry about. I have seen less than a handful of GC's ever off-road. Unless you are rock hopping, which I see as a pointless sport (just walk up the rock) an appropriate independent suspension would work just fine. And as Liberty owners, we shouldn't bash any other Jeep before or after it is in production.

JL Rockies, yes, the article was written before the sales numbers came in for the Liberty. The Liberty sold at the rate (probably better) than the Cherokee and is credited for bringing a lot of money to Chrysler, which Daimler stole and wasted and put Chrysler in the position it is in today.

The WK has one of the best 4 wheel drive systems around as it is. It has 3 electronic limited slip diffs and is able to put 100% of the engine torque to one wheel WITHOUT using traction control. It does have traction control and ESP for Jeeps without Quadra-Drive II.

Ive never seen the point of that hill assist crap. Can people really not hit the brakes going down a hill or start off on a hill without rolling back?

Still have trouble trying to fiqure out what the big deal is

1) they have to change to stay up with the times, all car/truck mfgrs are doing the same thing

2) people saying that they are getting away from making real 4 WDs etc
have you ever thought about what Jeep made in the past?
Lets looks at the;
A.) VJ Jeepster from 48-50 2 wheel drive only
B.) MJ Comanche pickup lots were produced again 2 wheel drive only
C.) FC out of the norm for sure made from 57 to 63
D.) SJs Full size Cherokees/ Wagoneers look at the old ads for them, they did not advertise them to 4WD owners more towards women and families pointing out available AC/ leather seats etc.

Jeep has always tried out new and different models in an attempt to sell more vehicles to a wider range of people. They hopefully will continue to do so in the future so they can also produce true 4 wheel drives as well

I always dreamed that in many of years, when I retire the liberty, I will get a grand cherokee, but after reading that, why? I mean, yah, Jeep is a great brand, and has been for many of years, but why bother when I can get a nice dodge ram 1500, 4x4, quad cab, and beat the doo doo out of a lot of what jeep builds today.

I heard Toyota is stopping production of the relatively new FJs in the next few years, 2010 maybe.

The Grand Cherokee will still be around at least, even if it will be worthless. :?
