MICHELIN LTX A/T 2 ? SHOULD I

Im interested in this tire in a load E specification due to the lasting effect of 17/32inch of a tire. I have a CRD and want something that will last and money is not really the issue. Obviously I want an all terrain and I came across this and was torn between this tire and Bridgestone Dueller Revos. Any thoughts will be helpful. Also I wonder how the ride is on a E specified tire on our KJS.

can't say for the kj's, but i love the my Michelin LTX M/S... I like the tread pattern a little better, an they preform the same while wheeling. I can tell you the my buddy has an 05 and his revos are lookin a little thin with only 10000 on the set

I personally haven't used used these specific tires on the KJ but I will say that Michelin tires are the longest lasting tires I have ever owned in my life.

It's not just the name you are paying for. It's also the michelin man and they are very good tires.

FWIW Michelin owns BFGoodrich.

Well money is not the issue do to the fact that I can get the tires at cost and install them myself. I just want to know if I can live with the ride of a E rated tire with good tire wear or not? Its for my CRD so I want it to last for many years 70000 plus miles. Thanks for the replys though.

What rides GREAT to me (after having some stiff-legged 4x4s and cars that were built to go around corners, my KJ might as well be a '62 Cadillac Series 61 sedan) may be a bit rough for your more-tender-than-mine butt. Only YOU can say whether or not the ride is acceptable.

That being said, the LTX AT2s are not worth it. They're good tires...but they're PRICEY. Go with BFG Mall Terrains if you must have an AT, but if off road traction is really THAT important, go MT.

Why would you put an LRE tire on your KJ? Towing? How much weight does towing add? If your trailer is set up properly, it won't add more than hauling 10 bags of water softener salt from the store, so 10 plies would be a big waste of time and money.

The fact of the matter is, the LTX AT2 has only been out for a little over a year, so nobody knows how long it's gonna last. For your purposes, if you don't wheel, get a pavement pounder tire like the BFG Long Trail. if you do wheel, get something more aggressive, like the Kumho KL71 or the Cooper Discoverer STT.

(my advice is worth precisely what you paid for it:D)

Well everybody has replied with price in mind. Does everybody think for price on these tire are too much. Yes they list for $163 (aka tirerack) current size but I can get them at wholesale for $143. At that price what other tires can compete for the quality that these tires offer. Again I can install them myself. Any suggestions would help immensly I am very curious how and what other tires compete with this one. Thanks for all the input.

143 is still too much to pay for what you get.

How do you plan on installing them yourself?

I work at a dealer (grease monkey also) therefore I get cheap parts/tires and cheap installs. The dealer I work for deals with mostly foreign cars therefore I never get a good indication of how all terrain tires do compared to all season. Thats why Im asking advice because I dont ever get to test these tires out and see how they wear. I can tell you all day long what tires to not get in all season and touring form but as for all terrains its a different story as with load range. You suggest that its too much but yet you have not told me whats better for the money. Im really interested what tire you suggest is so much better for the money that will give me just as good results. I live in West Michigan so I see a good amount of adverse weather conditions. Based on other forum members the michelins, bf goodrich, firestone and bridgestone all terrain tires hold up the best. The reason I like these tires are the fact that you get 17/32 tire which should last me a long time. In some cases thats two tires worth of wear in one. Maybe I just like the idea of the STAY PUFT marshmallow man holding my tires

I have, actually.

BFG Long Trails if it's a pavement pounder
BFG All Terrains if you really NEED an all terrain
Kumho KL78 AT - like above

a 10 ply would just be dumb to put on there if you don't wheel IMO.

I grew up in W MI and I know what the conditions are like. the BFG AT's are going to be BETTER in snow, as are the Long Trails. the KL78s, not too sure...ask tommudd.

Is your KJ lifted? what size tires?

Just because you have 17/32 doesn't mean you'll have a long-wearing tire. I don't expect my MT/R's (18/32 new) to live much past 40k miles.

I plan on keeping the the thing stock due to its a daily driver. So stock tires sizes are a given. The vehicle Mostly a pavement pounder with occasional two track/silver lake adventure. Everyone I have talked to that have jeeps have run the BF Goodrich All Terrains were very dissapointed in performance during west michigan snow days. Other friends have Bridgestone Dueller Revos that performed flawless in our weather here. Current size on the CRD is 225/75R16 Tires though being balanced is how I really look at a tire. All the Michelins, Bridgestones and Firestones tires I have balanced have used very little to no added weight. I cant say the same for Kumhos, Coopers, Goodyears, and Pirrellis. These I have always seen with large weights added and excessive road force during balance operations and thats brand new. I guess most likely I will end up the the Bridgestone Dueller or the Michelin. Tough decision to make though but Im sure I will be happy with one of them. Current set of Goodyear wrangler st lasted 37k so far with 4/32 left.

Whoever's disappointed with the BFG AT in Lake Effect snow must be used to something built by Arctic Cat rather than Jeep.

First tire depth has nothing to do with the way it performs ot how it will wear. Also with being mostly just a DD with no off road at all a 8 or 10 ply tire is not needed by you. I live in Toledo so see some snow every now and agian, Ran Firestone Destination ATs for two winters loved them but they would not wear out, so sold them (245-70X16) Have had the Kumhos on now for over 25000 and they still have way over 1/2 tread left , did great in snow last year and general running around and yes they have been off the road a few times :wink:

They balance great with one taking 2 oz and the rest less than that.
For me next another set of Kumhos or Cooper makes a great tire as well with two or three that would do a great job for you.

Well I got a average review on the Bf Goodrich tires from two specific people. One was running 30x10.5 15 on a lifted cherokee. The other on a grand cherokee 2nd generation. The tires were bf goodrich at ko performed all well except in heavy wet snow. Lack of traction and floated way too much. Other than snow they like them. The tires would fill with snow and not clean themselves. So I checked further on Tire Rack and reviews stated the same as drivers/ friends had indicated. So the TA KO are out for me based on those two drivers and tire rack reviews Further more on tire depth though if you have tire that has 500 treadware rating it will last a long time and with the extra 2-3 32nds of skin it will last longer than other ones with same treadware rating. I did notice that the kumhos have a 500 treadware rating with less tire depth though. I guess Ill have to try one of the tires that Im interested to get some real results and report back. If my current car which has 215/40/r17 kumho ast ecsta rides fairly rough on road I would think a E rated tire will ride about the same in my liberty at which I think can live with. comparing 215-40-17s which is a very low profile tire to say a 235 70 16 is like comparing the taste of apples and oranges, way different. A lot of factors play into tire wear and also how a tire performs. I worked in the tire business for quite a few years and have ran almost every mfgr out there. But go with what makes you happy , thats all that matters!

Yeah I understand where you were coming from that the tires are like two totally different tires but what I was saying is that If I can live with the ride of that one size. I should be able to live with an E rated tire on my Jeep

Artic Cats are over rated,just like BFG AT's,you couldn't pay me to run them,or any BFG anymore due to extremely weak sidewalls(went through 6 tires in less then 200 miles from tree ruit puntures in the sidewall's on my '84 Blazer).

The ride with "E" rated tires makes the KJ ride like a Jeep SHOULD,you will not get the life you want,40,000-45,000 miles at most.Personally I never run tires with less then 1/3 tread left,I buy new tires every 10,000-30,000 miles and never let my tires get below 1/3 tread since tires are rather cheap compared to killing myself from balding tires.

the BFG AT's are decent in snow, and they wear forever.

Those are the reasons I recommended them.

Just bought a set of four 245/70/16 Michelin LTX AT2 tires this afternoon to replace the set of Michelin LTX M/S that I had before. I know the Michelin LTX series is pretty expensive, but I do my business with Discount Tire and they take excellent care of me. Wound up paying the price of 3 tires instead of 4.

Michelin tires will last a good looonnngg time, so that's a big plus. I liked the more aggressive look of the AT2's over the M/S as well, that's why I got 'em.
