Like snowshoes. Snowshoes spread your weight over a wider area.

It's all about the ground pressure that your vehicle exerts. Ground Pressure @ Wiki

Tracks = very well distributed ground pressure so there is less tendency to dig in

Wheeled = high pressure contact points at the 4 corners. Airing down distributes the pressure across a greater area of the tire. Releaving the ground pressure

Apply this to any situation where the soil below the vehicle is soft.

i still not get it. how did i get to drive around all corrolla beach with my stock kj, even the tires aired down to 17psi in 2wd and made it there and back and drove a lot, like a lot. i did drive out of the ruts and into them. like i was really trying out my kj and it did amaziiiing. i did my 4hi from time to time, but it felt it didnt need it most of the time. does the sand where u drive depend on?

that beach area has some hard packed sand...but you where aired down and thats the key...have some sand hills that we climb down here...in 4 low 2nd auto, 4:10s w/ my usallual tire pressure at 30psi it take me a good hard run to get up it...same thing only rired down i can go twice as slow...beach driving for me now consists of 2wd unless it get soft then quik 4 hi to get going the back to 2wd...one main thing to stop your tranny to overheat is not let it change gears so much...if you have an auto...starw/ it in 1 then go to 2 then d if it starts to change alot go back to 2 slow down alittle also...

yeah, i went up some hills over there and i did use the ol' 4hi. but it didnt get hot or anything at any time. it behave like a baby. but my next beach driving i want to do it up in the Fire Island, NYC. I heard its nice over there. By then i would have done my tune up, and have my new tires, so everything will even be better.

I just got back from obx. Part time 4wd and fully aired tires and i was darn near stuck. I had to use 4low. The kj didn't have enough power to spin the tires enough in the sand to get momentum from a dead stop. It was like the brakes were on. I'm sure i could of made it go if i held the throttle to the floor but then i would of smoked the tranny. I threw it in 4low and aired down to 20psi and it was fine.

Check out my vacation in the midatlantic section.

nice pics btw~ :p. but did u try the lower psi with 4hi, instead of 4lo. like i said. after that first try i did and i lowered the to 17psi most of the time i was in 2wd. only when i went up a hill or something i had it in 4hi.

anyways been to fire island, nyc? robert moses park. where they allow beach driving? how is the sand and the terrain there compared to the OBX? i have been looking for info on it online and havent found nothing.

It really depends on the trails ... I was in OBX this weekend (Ocracoke) and I took exit 72 (South Point Rd) down to the beach to take a peek whether the entrance to sound side was still closed. I could make it all the way to the beach in 2WD, 40 PSI MT/R. I even reversed out all the way in 2WD.

There is also exit 68 by the dumpster. That one can be done in 2WD as well eventhough the park rangers will caution that you "need" 4WD :)

It depends on how packed the sand is.
