Do you ever notice that most of the vehicles off the road on snowy days are 4X4's?

Thank you TIM!!!! Beat me to it. Whenever I go to Vermont for the holidays, I see a TON of 4WD cars/trucks/SUVs off the road. Be carefull!! It will help you go STRAIGHT, but turning and stopping, you're on your own, and you're heavier than most, so remember that momentum! It can help with going up hills, but hurt in turns and downhill. Downshift like Tim said too, I do that all the time.

One more thing... 4-LO will give you MORE torque, and as we know, sno means LESS traction, so there's nothing for that torque to grab onto, you'll just spin the tires. That being said, sometimes if I'm trying to creeeeep down a slope in the snow (usually wheeling...) I put her in 4-lo so I can downshift to 2nd or 1st and really go slow, but again, that's slowing down, not speeding up...

On really steep hills the kind you would have to use your brakes to keep from picking up speed in the coasting down mode I use 4 Lo it eliminates having to use the brakes alot, brakes on snow and ice don't work. Remember that the compresion of the engine can lock the wheels up sometimes and turn your truck into a tobogan so be reaby to give slight bit of throttle if this happens to keep the wheels spinning. The rest of the time I am in Hi range depending on conditions, part time if snow ice everywhere, full time when patchy. Good luck and have fun.

brakes work just great on snow and ice, you just need a good set of tires. Nothing will improve a vehicle's handling like tires, especially on snow and ice.

So you're telling me my Jeep will turn into a winter hat?!?!?!? I can't WAIT to see that!!!!

I'm sorry dude, I just couldn't resist that one.....LOL :D

As far as traction goes, especially on snow, Tires have alot to do with it. Still got the crapyears....don't expect much. But if you've got some better ones on there, you can feel a little better. I'll also agree the downshifting does ALOT to help stop you in bad weather.....that and just not speeding (for the conditions) at all.

How do you get winter hat from tobogan? Am I missing something or do you not know what a tobogan is (the big sled)?

Good job Catcher! Sounds like you used your Jeep just right. You got where you needed to get safely and didn't get stuck. Jeep on!

And, though regional differences can play a minor role, typically...

Sled -wood slats & metal rails

Toboggan - flat, wood, & curled front

AND

Toboggan - hat
