So....not to start yet another mileage thread, but I'm pretty impressed by this. I spent the past two weeks on a summer trip from central FL to upstate NY, around NY and back down to FL. The trip total is almost 5000 miles in 16 days. My calculated mileage based on the trip odometer (GPS wasn't on all the time) and my fuel receipts was 31 mpg...average! Incredible. I've never gotten a mixed driving average over 29 before (granted this mix was largely highway), though I get this often enough on the highway. Also very impressive is that my highway mileage went as high as 34 and change (per the evic, but mine has always been pretty close to what I calculate). This is running dino-diesel mostly since it's hard to locate good bio offerings along a route.

Anyway, the big change for me between this run and prior runs is the SEGR. Thanks for great mod guys.

Chester

Impressive. Were you running the ORM (MAF unplugged) before installing the SEGR?

I wasn't running the ORM prior to the SEGR. I unplugged a few times, but the CEL was annoying me so I didn't run that way.

What highway speeds? We can't seem to get better than 23mpg highway. Totally sucks and about ready to sell it unless it can get 28. I'm going to buy an SERG this week. The ORM didn't help. It seemed to at first, but then went back down.

I'm usually within 2 mph of the posted limit. On drives this long I get tired of passing and like to hang out in the right lane. So in the northern states I'm usually going about 65-68 and in the south 70-72.

Are you using the Odometer as your guide? I don't know of anyone who has one that doesn't read around 6% error. On long hauls I can count on 28 to 32 but it drops into your range if I am driving stop and go and idling alot. Of course there is the issue of tires and tire inflation too.

I don't think many have seen huge improvements in mileage from the ORM or SEGR alone, maybe 1-2 MPG.

Dave, like everything else, improvements seen from any mod depend heavily on your driving style.

ORM or SEGR, clean MAP, check your air filter (the CRD sucks a lot of air, and the poor design of the factory airbox had mine fouling every 5-6k miles). When you replace it, go with a Wix or other high-pleat high-surface area filter (NAPA has them). Make sure the tires are inflated properly (check your sidewalls for max pressure, then reduce by 10-20%... I run mine at 38 PSI, higher pressures = lower rolling resistance and better fuel economy, but at the cost of somewhat reduced grip). Remove any unecessary items that increase wind drag (roof cargo box, bike racks, etc...). If you have an aftermarket rack you want to keep on, invest in an air dam to cut the drag.

Dropping your speed down to 65 mph will make a huge difference. The Liberty has the aerodynamics of a shoebox, and wind drag increases at a geometric rate as speed increases. The sweet spot is right around 64 mph.

I also tend to get better mileage the first 1-2000 miles after an oil change. Use a good quality diesel specific synthetic like Rotella 5w40.

28 mpg highway is about normal for my CRD. City I get 20-22 mpg.

Hello,
I am new to forums and have never posted to one before, so I'll need to get up to speed on protocol.
I just purchased a 2006 CRD in MT and drove it back to SoCal.
CEL on trip - DTC System Low Voltage - unknown source
CEL on leg two - EGR
Glow Plug Lamp Unlit - Glow Plug Module
Brake Switch not immediately shutting off cruiseC - Brake Switch
All Warranty.
I am already addicted to the sound of the diesel motor and love the smell of diesel - fishing boats since forever.

I wish to purchase a completed SEGR kit if any are left available. I would make payment immediately.

Mitchell

Yep on the mileage. I didn't see a noticeable improvement until this trip, so I'm guessing that EGR is more active during highway driving.

My speedometer is off by about 2 MPH. The speeds I mentioned are based on the GPS speed indicator. It's easier to see since I drive with left hand on the wheel blocking my speedometer most of the time. :) The trip mileage is based on the odometer though. I don't always have my GPS on, so I can't keep accurate track with it over this long of a trip. However, I have used the same method for calculating mileage for past trips and this trip mileage was significantly higher than previous.

Most CRD odometers are off by 6% to 10% reading slow andnot the same as the speedometer which reads faster. So if you are ahnd calculating the the distance you need to add 6% to 10% to the mileage your odometer read to make up which will increase miles drivem per gallon.

I'm gettin, 560- 600 from a tank of Regular Dino, mixed power service and two cycle. but actually notice more mileage witout mixtures or very light mixtures. I have a sport soooo no evic,,, all straight math. unless my calculators are wrong? Dunno, but one thing is I LOVE MY LITTLE TRACTOR!! I'm gettin an edge box soon, but I don't expect mileage to go up, cause the pedal will be goin down. :D

Interesting question perhaps, will the SEGR work on my manual CRD, i read it is wired so that in N and P on the auto box the FCV shuts for smoother shutdowns
and no runaway diesel :?

I know that manuals typically have a clutch-sense for shift-lockout. Many of them also have a speed lockout so you can't shift into 1st going 40 MPH.... I would probably work out something with the e-brake trigger signal. I think the P/N sense on the auto transmission controller is a close-to-ground, so simply grounding that lead to the body serves the same function, however you do it...
