Unfortunately it is getting close to that time of year again. I usually use Goodyear Nordic winter tires but they are noy available in the 235/70R16. Closest available size to that is 225/60R16 which would be too small. Any recommendations for other brands. I like using winter tires because of the snow and ice we get up here in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. I will put the tires on winter rims as well. Tending to lean towards the Nokian Hakkapeliitta tires but they do cost more money. Probably stud them as well. Any thoughts on this?

Thank you.

If youi have the full time four wheel drive option you shouldn't require winter tires. I run goodyeay wrangler silent armors here in fort mcmurray and have yet to have any problems.

Mine is the part time with the ESP. I have the stock Goodyears SR/A's and they don't even like wet pavement with the ESP turned off. Feel safer and able to get through more with the winter tires. To me it is worth the changeover.

I got the following tires for the KJ (we ran a fleet of them)

Michelin Latittude Artic Ice (rated no 1 by consumers reports)
Michelin X Ice
Toyo Open country Winter
Yokahama Geolander Ice
Goodyear Fortera HL all season
Goodyear Fortera Triple Tread (snowflake DOT rated) all season
Goodyear ST crap OEM
Goodyear RSA/GSA crap OEM

From my experience, I would go with the best rated tires per CS since $$$ is not the issue but safety.... there are only a few sq inches of contact with your tires and the driving surface... don't cheap out and get rid of the stockers.

If you think all season tires will cut it in winter, watch this excellent story on Canada's CBC Marketplace on Rental Cars w/ all Seasons only. All Seasons lose grip as they harden at temps from 5-7 degrees Celsius so a softer
rubber snow is better.

I heard Quebec just legislated snows for all vehicles in winter this year including rental vehicles.

4x4 are only good to get you to start moving only if you have good traction ie. stuck in the snow but can't help you stop faster than a RWD or FWD carr nor give you any better control.

http://www.cbc.ca/marketplace/get_a_grip/

For the ave price of $650, get some snows.

Ask me how I know...
