I pay $2400 annually for my Jeep's insurance, and they know about six 'violations' on my driving record.
I pay $1200 annually to insure a motorcycle, <751cc.
This is all in Colorado, and I'm almost 20 years old.

I'd move to America if I was paying $4500 to insure one vehicle, especially a car, in Canada. I'm not saying you should move, that just seems insane to me

They've really changed things here in BC. They'll raise your premiums if you get too many speeding tickets and other traffic violations. In fact, my brother got a letter a few months ago stating that they were going to keep an eye on his driving record because he had a few excessive speeding tickets. He isn't allowed to get any more or they'll drive his insurance up.

I like how you said they know about six "violations" LOL. Translation that is all I am gonna tell them about and it would have been less if they didn't snoop around :D

I used the term 'violations' because that is what my insurance company calls anything on your driving record. I have 3 speeding tickets 10-15 MPH over, 1 defective equipment, and 2 comprehensive claims over $1k. I was upfront with them, I didn't want to get the false hope of cheap premiums only to get a huge increase once they checked my record.

My point was that, even with that ^ driving record, I'm paying less than Unlimited, which is a shame for his sake.

I pay about $1k a year in NJ for full coverage insurance on my KJ and liability on my beater toyota pickup. I think of selling the KJ all the time but it doesn't make sense to sell it. I bought it used 3years ago and it's almost paid off. Just turned 112k miles and still running fine. If i were to get rid of it i'd get a 4dr trd tacoma, fj cruiser, or a crd kj. Either one of the 3 would more than double my monthly payment and most likely my insurance.

Me I'm 37 & I paid $1111.00 a yr on insurance on my 03 Libby(yeah cool dollar amount) This year with the cost of everything going up my insurance went up $77.00 a year. I called my agent I know a girl who works there & I said whats up with that, she told me its Progressive raising rates. Nice I said I been with them 8 years, clean record & rates go up. I figured it would go down maybe 77.00 a year. Sucks to hear what our friends north of the border in hockey land are paying. Can you imagine the rates for a driver with a bad record up in the great white north? _UNLIMITED_ hope it all works out for you & you can get back into a Libby. Also good to see you got outta that uninjured.

I pay less then $800 a year for my KJ(and renter insurance,30 years old, clean record),full coverage with $250 deductables, and I think I pay to much.God I missed the days of being able to use "Farm use only" insurance on my vehicles,$54 dollars every 6 months,$0 deductables,I always had a excuse for being anywhere that dealt with the farm if a cop stopped me.

Have both, its really nice to have the KJ and a TJ. Best of both worlds.

Yup, what Taz said. What would be perfect for me is to give the wife the KJ and get a TJ Rubicon (if only they made them with a CRD :D ).

So my point again is pay for the damage out of pocket and not via ICBC...

x2 Even the interest on a three year loan on $10,000 to pay for the accident is going to be cheaper than the next 5+ years of paying ICBC the difference between your new rate and what you would have been paying if you were accident free.

The ironic thing is that when you pay off the $10,000 loan it will go a long way towards giving you a far better credit rating and a lower interest rate when you go to buy a house. If the bank does not want to loan you the money, apply for a low interest rate credit card and put the accident on that. You would still get the benefit of the better credit rating once the card is paid off.

the accident was reported to icbc right away by the other driver. Even if i didnt get it fixed through icbc, my rate still goes up, because the accident is on record. So it would make no sense to fix it myself when my insurance will go up either way

Actually that is the best way to do this. ICBC supervises the repair work and all you do is pay ICBC the accident amount and it is off your record. ICBC is only the middle man, ensuring that the job is done properly. This is what I did several years ago. It did not show up on my insurance after I paid for it, I kept my drivers discount and all were happy. They may have changed the rules since then, but a quick phone call to ICBC main office in Burnaby should clear up any questions. I believe that this is what ICBC would prefer you do since it is cheaper for you and ICBC.

All Liberator and I are saying is take out a loan and pay the accident amount to ICBC, not pay for the accident through third party body shops. You loose any ability to go back and have any problems dealt with at a later date if you do not use ICBC as the middle man. ICBC will ensure that the work is done properly before you get your vehicles back. If you do this privately, you can be on the hook for a lot more money than you planned.

Please check this out with ICBC, but I am sure that ths is still an option they give you that will not affect your rates.

i already did the calculating, over the course of 7 years, until im at 25% discount, which is where i would have been at in 3 years if i didnt get into the accident, i am going to pay an extra $8000 for insurance.

The car is now over $8000 in damages, then there is the guys truck which is still probably like $800-$1000 in damage also.

In the end, its cheaper just to let them pay it and let me pay the higher insurance. The car could still be even more to fix, hell it may even be totalled, if its totalled im not going to get it fixed anyways

Car insurance may be a scam? You pay them a lot of money every year for the privilege of being able to borrow from them when you get into an accident. Then you have to pay it all back anyways through increased monthly payments. :?
