tommudd dumb question here.... when the CV's die on you, is it like you are dead in the water and it's completely undrivable, or would you still be alright in 2wd until you got help? I ask because my wife uses the truck alot in the winter, and I really dont want her to end up completely stranded somewhere. If the truck becomes completely undrivable when the CV's die out, I would rather pay the money up front now for parts that I know will be less likely to fail.

And just to clarify for my own knowledge, even with a manual trans, you feel that regearing should be prioritized?

thanks!

The cvs will let you know usually when they are going PLUS people have thousands of miles on here with running lifts that high with no problems and running the stock cvs. My cvs have 109,500 on them and over 70,000 of that was lifted, still running great

Regearing, yes I would no matter what I am driving, (man-or-auto) do you want to run up hills in a lower gear just to make it up due to gearing, anyone that says you don't need to is only fooling you and themselves. with going to say a 32 inch tire you are effectivally going to like a 3.25/3.30 ratio.

If I understood TJKJ2002 correctly, then you would want something close to a 30” tire with 4:10’s to be within the factory specs. Does this sound right? Maybe a 30.5” tire would be doable?

i have 265/75/16's with stock gearing and have never had a problem. sure some reallllly long steep hills require a downshift to 5th.. but they prob. would with stock tires as well.

itsajeepthing- i would not regear untill after you get the lift and tires. you might never miss the power (i didnt). as far as CV's go.. my passanger side boot ripped (might have been because a stick got it..or because of the lift i dont know which one) but i ran it without grease for a long time since i was getting a new one anyway... that was with about 14000 miles on the lift. To run 265/75's on your stock wheels you will need to buy 1.25in spacers (spidertrax are the only ones i would trust) or buy different offset of wheels to avoid rubbing on the sway bar. any other questions feel free to PM me

this whole thing with having the PROPER gearing has been discussed on here a bunch over the years and I have also listened to others over the years before I got on here saying I don't have to regear it runs fine. When I did my F150 years ago and went from 30 inch to 38s I thought it ran fine as well until I switched to 5.13s and then I could smoke them through 3 gears almost
Reason why I am not running any bigger than the 255-70s is I don't want to lose all my power, but soon
it takes time to learn what helps and what does not, until you do it you do not fully understand and can lead others astray

trust me if there was a way to it wrong I did it back years ago, but thank goodness I had a lot of "older" guys who I listened to and were good enough to help me out of the stuff I got into, including building and treating 4 WDs the wrong way, alcohol, drugs.
Now I am the same age as the older guys that helped me, but respecting your elders went out of style now a days

dont get me wrong.. i do appreciate and listen to what everyone has to say (esp. Rev T and a few others.. i know they've been around the trails a few times)... but i'm just saying. for the cost of gears.. and labor to install them if your not that handy gear wise... it might be worth living with the cut in power (which isnt that much to begin with). it also depends on where you live and how you drive... hills.. traffic.. and so on. to each his own.

It has alot to do with where you live also to how much power you will loose, not to mention regearing will actually cut down on repaires/replacement of pricey parts also. You live in a relitive flat, very close to sea leval area, and having the 6 speed helps alot with the 4:1 something first gear, but you are wearing your clutch faster then normal also. Here in Colorado Springs CO at 6000'+ and contently going up/down in elevation, thousands of feet in a few miles, not regearing will not only kill your mpg's but will also fry a auto tranny in a heartbeat. The cost of the gears was very minimal since I was installing the TT and ARB anyway and has paid for itself in less then a year.I drove for about a year with 3.73's and 265/75's,with no armor, and was getting worse mpg's then I get now with 1500lbs extra wieght,4.10's,and the same sized 265/75's.

Regearing will make a huge difference and the cost will be made up in less then a 1.5 years for most in gas savings alone, less then a year if you install lockers at the same time since they will not charge you more for the gear install when they are already doing the locker installs, you just pay for the gears and zero labor which would be about only $400.

where can you get the gears for $400?? I have looked but I found the D30a for $216 and the 8.25 was about $250 plus the bearing kits were another $100 a peice

Well first I said "about only $400",my 8.25 gears(Yukon) where $190,couldn't say about the front's since I bought a complete D30A with 4.10's installed already. But $216 and $190 are only $406,the install kits would also be needed if you did locker installs so I counted them with the lockers. If you just did a gear swap then yes you'd need the install kits added to the gear prices,Reider Racing sells most of there master gear install kits for $80(Precision Gear),so a extra $160 is not bad.The killer is the labor for the front diff since it needs to be removed from the KJ to do the gears,if you remove it yourself it will save you about $300-$600 in labor alone. Then if you know poeple you can get gear installs done for a real good price,USAFCOP and myself got both our HP44's and USAFCOP's 9" done up with 5.13 gears and ARB's(and my HP44 mounts welded on) for a killer price(will not say price for reasons) from one of the best gear installer's in CO.

I wouldn’t mind buying some gears, but I don’t know where to start or what to order. So, if somebody can give me a phone number and part numbers for 4:10’s for a front and rear KJ diff, then I will call and get them ordered. This regearing and air locker stuff is kinda expensive, so I will need to buy the parts in stages.

Stage 1 (September) Front and Rear 4:10’s
Stage 2 (October) ARB Front Air Locker
Stage 3 (November) ARB Rear Air Locker
Stage 4 (December) ARB on-board air compressor, wiring, switches, and hoses
Stage 5 (Hope the wife doesn’t kill me before the install)

Yep, everything is expensive and reality bites. Compared to some, I am a poor boy, so I have to take things real slow. .

I have two rules I go by:

1. I don't use the credit card or the saving account to buy Jeep stuff (well I use it but pay it off during the 30 day period).

2. After the lift and rock rails, I stopped all major purchases until the Jeep was paid for (just did that).

Now I have a snorkel waiting to put on this winter, and nice Powerslot brakes and pads waiting to go on, and I am looking at an Inmotion tune, new A-arms (upgrade Gen 3) and a new gas tank skid this month (since the used Mopar one is not working out for me). $$$$$

most are in the same boat as you, everything I have done to the KJ has been in stages, paid for in cash at the time of purchase,
TJKJ has been buying parts for his SFA now for what like a year,
My next upgrade will be a lot at one time but buying everything from a memeber on here helps a lot and also have saved up for everything for the last three months!

i'm in the same boat... i only allow myself one jeep part (or jeep project) a year.. and that comes from my tax refund mostly. This year is a Aussie locker.. whenever they decide to release it. so at this rate by 2065 i'll have one mean KJ!

At the rate I am going and the number of miles I have on it now , when I get it just right  ( if it ever gets just right) it will be in 4 more years but the KJ will have 250,000 miles on it

The stages listed above are only guidelines. But if I don’t give myself a goal, then I will not get it done. I’ve done a few unique and random things to save and earn a little extra money for my Jeep upgrades.
