Them storage catalysts work real well.... also real cheap to replace when completely plugged. But hey, they worked on the dyno and passed emmissions.

They used a Mazada engine in the Ranger. You might also be supprised to learn Ford offered a BMW diesel in one of their big cars

Found it  1984 and 85 Lincoln Contential Mark VII. Here's the blurb.
The engine choices were a 5.0 L V8 and an ultra-rare (200-500 made) 2.4 L Straight-6 diesel. The diesel was a BMW design with a turbocharger. Rumors have it that a 5-speed manual transmission was bolted to at least 1 of these diesels. It was available on all trim levels until the engine was dropped after 1985.[/quote

I had on of those for awhile
awesome ride, air supension was a pain.
you couldnt even buy any hoses for it /NA

Emission laws have hurt fuel economy more than anything else. That's why you can get 20 mpg with a 72 Ford pick up. Mpg isn't the challenge for vehicle manufacturers. It's the same with diesels. Take a 30% reduction in emissions and you lose 30% in efficiency. Epa laws need to be modified to reflect mpg.

Please be sure to keep political mentions, etc. out of this thread or you know what will happen.

Thanks.

Sure, we still have the first amendment, but the forum here is private property. The owners have the right to decide on content. Jeep discussion is equally unwelcome on a political board.

Heck, until a couple years ago I didn't even know that many of the OEM's had offered diesel versions of several models during the 80's - they just didn't advertise them. I was flabbergasted when a friend at work picked up a used '87 Ford Ranger diesel a couple years back, and he told me it wasn't a Canadian import but had actually been sold new in this country.

The same engine is in the BMW 524TD and Vixen motorhome. I have a Vixen, and had a Euro-spec BMW 324TD with the same engine. The Vixen has a Renault 5-speed transaxle.

FYI, the small Chryslers sold in Europe (like the Jeep Patriot CRD) use 2.0 liter VW TDI engines, which are the basis of the 2.0 TDI's being sold in new Jetta's down at my local VW dealership this very morning. VW is happy to sell the technology to another company, for $. Just as Toyota is happy to sell their hybrid drive trains to Ford and Nissan, for a $.

Of course, we all know soot traps will most certainly clog and the vehicle will instantly burst into flames just after it exits the parking lot  Stupid German engineers can't possibly know anything.

Chrysler wouldn't have to do this if they had invested their own $$ into developing clean diesels.

I just get a chuckle every time I see folks who don't let reality get in the way of a good rant. :P
