Sad to say, I had to trade in my KJ last weekend due to the inability to make payments on it.

Last year my wife and I had walked into the dealer to try and turn in my PT Cruiser I had on lease. Somehow we walked out a few hours later with two cars, and I still hadn't turned in the Cruiser. (I know, we are partly to blame for this). My wife had an 05 Lancer OZ Rally and I had my 05 Librtry Limited 4x4. The way they wrangled it was by giving us money to pay for our first year's payments on the libby. Well, one year later and we still can't afford them. We also found out that we got royally screwed on the purchase price of both vehicles. So we were totally upside down by nearly the same amount the cars were actually worth. Sleazy dealing at its finest.

We traded both back in last weekend and ended up with an '08 charger as it was the only vehicle they had that could absorb enough of the negative equity to ge the bank to finance it. So now my wife has a brand new charger (though it only has the 2.7, weeeeak! ) and I need to find myself a new vehicle. Due to cost of gas I'm just going to get a small sedan for a couple thousand, otherwise I'd just get myself a TJ wrangler.

So, I just wanted to let you guys know what happened, and to thank everyone for the great board you have put together and all of the really good information on here. I know that I have disagreeed with a few of you on some things, but it was nice that it never got ugly, just a freindly online debate. I don't forsee myself ever getting another KJ (unless I stumble across a CRD for a song), my next jeep is going to be a TJ, and if I can manage it, an LJ (Unlimited).

Keep up the good work and keep on Jeepin'! :D

X2 I spent 5 years riding the city bus to work, living in a dumpy small apartment just trying to make ends meet. Couldn't afford crap except to pay child support. My kids say they have more fond memories of that time and had more fun walking everywhere with me than any other period in their lives. It's kind of like they say, with life throws you lemons, make lemonade.

That just plain sucks. But you just have to make the best of it. I agree with Taz. Some of the best times I have had with my wife and kids were when we could only afford ramen for dinner and played board games for entertainment. Its just transportation.

BTW: which dealership was it? I lived in Lehi most of my life and worked in the Salt Lake valley in numerous locations. Nearly all of my family is still there and I would like to tell them who to avoid.

Next time when your ready for a jeep, just save a few thousand and buy a good used Jeep. for 3-4k you can get alot of jeep, and not have payments.

I know it may be hard to envision now, but thats gonna be the best thing for you in the near future.

Also, don't forget that even though you no longer have your KJ, you're still welcome here.

It was Ken Garff in West Valley. The sales manager that did the dealing no longer works there, and probably for that very reason. I bet they had a lot of unhappy customers after that. Ken Garff did make good on this though. I think they did everything they reasonably could to help fix it, and we are doing much better financially because of it. I might buy another car from them in the future, though it's going to be another 10 years or so before I look at buying a new car, vs. used.

I do plan on buying a used TJ sometime in the future, but onyl if I have enough money set aside for it already. For now I'm going to spend around 2,000 to buy a sedan. I'm looking at some late '80's BMW 325's, since while I cannot afford much, I don't want to suffer with some POS beater. The 325's have a good amount of power, so at least I will still enjoy driving to and from work. Better than I would do in some beat up cavalier or something. If it weren't for the fact that I need to drive my 15 month old daughter to the sittes every day, I'd probably pick up a camaro. I miss my 89 I used to have.

Man, I dont think a 20 year old BMW is the right car for you, can you say expensive repairs and parts?

For 2k you could pick up a 10 year old ford taurus sedan/wagon, or any number of good used cars.

For that matter for about 2k you could pick up a 15 year old Cherokee, and know that your getting a good vehicle that will be cheap for repairs.

No offense, but Im here scratching my head at your first post going "That doesn't sound like the brightest thing to do" and now I'm reading this latest one going "That doesn't sound like the brightest thing to do."

Now far be it from me to cast the first stone, but people tend to focus in on wanting something, or they tend to rationalize getting something(particularly cars) over something else. The outside observer has the ability to be objective and bring some reason to the argument, though when you have your mind set on something generally that objective assessment is met with hostility or ignored.

In reality what are your reasons for wanting a BMW "something you can enjoy driving to work" IMO it sounds like type of thinking is what got you into this financial boat in the first place.

IMO it would behoove you to try and take a step back and look at the situation objectively.

Sir Sam, I definitely appreciate the input. Don't worry, I've been looking at many, many, many, ("I'm getting sick of looking at cars" many!) options for a new car since my first post. At first I thought about getting an older car for cheap and fixing what ever was wrong with it, but soon decided I did not want to mess with it. So I started looking to see what I could find that was newer and within my price range. That narrowed the list down a lot, but there were still a lot of newer cars that needed quite a few repairs. It is amazing how performing regular maintenance on a car will make it last much longer than "normal", and how not keeping it up will make it die a quick death from a thousand annoying problems.

Anyway, I've finally nailed it down to a vehicle that is fairly new, in good running condition, looks nice, and is within budget. So far this has been the best option because there is nothing on it that needs to be fixed. I found a 2002 Ford Crown Vic Police Interceptor. Surprisingly, it was my wife that pushed me towards it. (I didn't seriosuly look at the cop cars I was finding before because I thought she would laugh at me, go figure) I went and checked it out today. It's in great condition, especially for the price ($2600). Tires are pretty much new, body doesn't have any serious damage (a couple small scrapes is all, what do you expect, it's an ex-cop car), the interior is pretty clean, and everything works on it. It may not get the best gas mileage, but it's better than what I was getting in the libby, so it's still a plus. The best part about this car is there is nothing wrong with it at the moment. Doesn't have any leaks, everything works, drives terrific. And to your point about cost of repairs, the parts are going to be much cheaper since it is a ford with many names under the same overall design and tons of these cars still on the roads.

I decided to go with a bigger car because lately smaller cars have been killing my back. The libby did great because I sat upright and had lots of room. My wife's lancer on the other hand kills me after an hour no matter how I sit.

As for your point about my first post, I guess I don't quite understand. If you are thinking that the deal I ended up striking with teh dealership was not the best idea, then you might be right. But you need to look at it from my perspective. There was no way on earth I was going to be able to afford the payments for those two cars. I had no way of refinancing them, be it a new auto loan, 2nd mortgage, credit line, rich relative, etc. I'm all out of rich relatives (Sadly), don't have enough credit line, and there is not enough equity in my home to swallow $42,000 in debt. We explored all of our options before going to the dealer, believe me. This deal was one step up from defaulting on one of the cars, ruining both mine and my wifes credit, and being miserable for the next 7-10 years while we tried to rebuild our credit, if we ever were able to. It may not be the best option out there, but it's working the way we need it to so that we can stay financially afloat.

Putting a number on it might help you udnerstand. Our payments were $750 combined. We could afford maybe $500, but just barely (and I mean, literally, just barely, we already have all of our bills down to the necessary levels, there is no cable bill or any extra fluff we could get rid of, we already have done that). So that would have put us at negative $250 a month, which adds up really, really fast. Second, we were upside dwon in our loans for the cars by $19,500 combined. That is enough for a third car. Even if we financed $20k through an equity, we still would not have been able to meet monthly payments. We were pretty much inbetween a rock and a hard place.

All of this would never have been a problem of course, if we had stuck to our guns and not let them talk us into getting the two cars to begin with. But, everyone is a little bit stupid often, and a lot stupid sometimes. Sadly that was one of our really dumb moments in life. We have learned a great deal form it, though at a very high financial cost, and are sure to never repeat it again and will make sure our children do not do the same thing, or at least rry our darndest to.

At any rate, I do appreciate your comments Sir Sam, they are completely valid and truthful. Sometimes you just gotta do what you can to get back on track.

Thats what my comments were geared toward. Not turning the cars back in.

I had a 96 Crown vic, ex POPO car, but not a patrol car, used for a bike cop to drive to where ever he rode - it was a CNG vehicle, had I gotten a home pump for it would it have cost about $1.00 per GGE(gasoline gallon equivalent) to drive it.

If I may... I agree with Sir Sam regarding a BMW. I would recommend a used Honda, or Toyota. It sounds to me, the last thing you need now is expensive European car repair bills.

Best of luck!

Another enjoyable car for cheap is the older Lebaron convertibles. Yea, go on and laugh, but I used to work on those and the Daytona's all the time. What you gotta do though is look for an 89 Lebaron Turbo (preferably 5 speed). These sell for $500 to $1500 depending on the condition. They get 30 MPG when you stay off the turbo and haul rear when you need it. The best part is that there is a whole community that builds these up to muscle cars. You can get 400+ HP out of that 4 cylinder. It can pretty easily be modified (and cheaply) to hit 250-300hp. Plus the top-down driving is something to enjoy.

I picked up the 2002 Interceptor last night. Drove it home after filling up the tank and airing up the tires. It was mostly highway so it was good to see how it did at speed. It drives great and has plenty of power. I've put about 25 miles on it since getting it, everyhting seems good.

One issue it has though is the passenger side catalytic converter somhow got backed into soemthing, pushing it forward and causing some damage to the cats. It's an easy fix as the whole cat assembly bolts in. It's the biggest problem I have found so far.

I'm happy with it, it's a good solid car and since it seems to have been well cared for it should give me more than enough life out of it for the price ($2600)

Now I just need to save up and get a TJ so I can get offroad again!
