yesterday i had the usual oil change and tire rotation, however i also had to take the tranny in so that they could drive it and make sure its shift points stayed the same... a little bit before this for like a day it would hold 1st gear forever and shift poorly. they drove it 37 miles (i of course ride with them although if it misbehaves it duplicates the problem for them) everything checked out ok and in december they have to check it out one more time and if it makes it, i get to keep this tranny!!!!! a good thing since this one does what it is supposed to. chrysler corp took possesion of my old transmission to investigate why it ate a clutch pack. after all of this i went to see one of my friends get married in Vail CO. its alot of uphill and alot of disengaging O/D for torque and engine braking @ 65 MPH. after the trip to and from was all said and done... 24.701MPG 8) ladies and gentlemen i broke the record of 24.628MPG from last fall

I see some of my best mileage while driving I70 over the mountains. Since I don't just race up the hill my uphill mpg at 55 or so stays around 14-15mpg, then my downhill peaks over 99mpg, so it ends up averaging out pretty high.

Better than I can do on flat land going the same average speed.

We really don't have any mountains here in Michigan. Pretty much all flat.

24.7mpg's is very good. The best I ever got was just a tad shy of 23mpg's on the highway going from SD to WA(I-90 all the way) towing a 3000lbs trailer, average speed about 60mph and all stock except 225/75 MT/R's and the AFE CAI(all synthetic fluids also).

24. daaamn! best i have done is drive from VA beach to Falls Church There and back in one tank. One way there is 194 miles. and on our way there i had to drop someone off 11 miles off my normal route. so i almost made to 400miles with one tank. i think it would have made it even more if i drove up there. my friend did and he was speeding the way there and we did hit lots of traffic. 2 hours of stop and go. i dont think that helped at all. my gas tank light went off as soon as i got to the gas station on base.

what im still suprised about is how this engine dosent get the credit it deserves. when you look at its stats on paper it looks OLD, i mean O L D... theres no form of VVT, its an iron block, only 12 valves and it only makes 210 horses and 235 Lb.-Ft. of twist... but gosh darnit it works! and well! it has a great powerband and the engine never minded hanging out at about 3k rpm at 70MPH with O/D off and it provides superb engine braking. the 4.0 liter engines used in the toyota and nissan competitors make more power at about the same points in the powerband but they dont feel as strong and durable as this engine... it feels like i could run this engine forever and ever and not have a problem and still get 24.701MPG out of it. im sure there are other better american engines but for the jeep liberty this one does a fine job! wonder how the 3.6L Phoenix V6 engine for the 2010 liberty and the 4.0L Phoenix V6 engine for the 2010 wrangler will be???

I think it is something about the gas and altitude here. I averaged 16.8 - 17.8 the whole time I lived in Phoenix and Flagstaff in the libby. Since I've moved to CO, I average 20-21 and I'm a lead foot driver since that is the way traffic flows in AZ.

My regular route south to visit my parents in Southeastern Ohio ( hill country ) is about a 500/525 round trip so its a good gauge of mileage, some freeway, two lane and then down to back country gravel single lane roads, most always the same route so I can look at changes I make and see what it does.

With my current setup I average 20.25 to 20.50 running 5 above the limit most times with some slow back road cruising thrown in for good measure.

That's great mileage, best I ever had was 22.5, on trip to Bethany Beach Delaware. We (daughter) always got the windows down so with the wind resistance comming in that not too bad.

The best mileage I've gotten is 22.55mpg...... mixed city and highway. Wish I could do better but not too shabby.

Interestingly, my '96 Cherokee with the 4cyl and manual transmission does not get much better.

The 3.7 really is a strong work horse. 200 thousand miles easy - just keep up with the oil changes and the like, and we are good to go.... :o :o

Only thing we've got to worry about in the motor side is weak valve springs.

200K miles shouldn't be a problem if your motor doesn't eat a spring.
