First off KKJim, Pics or it didn't happen. Second off I have a lifted KJ with some of the most agressive AT tires out there, General Grabber AT2s 245/75 and I have rubbing. Trust me you will rub, give it a month and you'll start to see warn spots on the inner wheel well and some of the cheap plastic rivets will be missing as your tires will have ripped them out unless you purchased racing slicks bathed in KY Jelly. BTW did you buy only 4 of them because id like to know how well the 5th one fits underneath, should be fun removing a 40lb tire from under a mud stuck KK out in the wild, as you said you don't have a mall crawler.

Ah yes, the "most aggressive Mall Terrain" chestnut. Sorry, but "aggressive" and "AT" don't belong in the same tire-related sentence.

And dragging the spare out from underneath in mud...screw that, i'm not gonna change a tire in the mud. somebody can pull me out before i change that flat. Call me a wuss, but I'm sure as hell not changing a flat in a mud pit. F that.

Don't call somebody a mall crawler for putting oversized MT's on a stock rig if you have AT's because you like "road manners"

I do not really care if they are ATs/MTs/MTRs I would not want them on mine with no more clearance than that, I would never make it up into my driveway back down home.
I guess I don't understand the reasoning in putting on tires where you have no leeway for flexing etc.

but its yours and to each his own, so good luck with them

Now, what I said being said...

I'm not going to hold it against anybody that runs an AT tire. However, in a discussion specifically about MT/R's, don't call your General Grabber AT's "aggressive". Yeah, you have rubbing with 245/75-16s if you don't do anything about it...I do too...I figure the tire will chew away whatever offending plastic gets in its way, so I'm not too concerned about it. Mine's lifted (now), and I probably get the same rubbing. It's part of living with a lifted Jeep.

Tom...I (and I assume the OP has the same plan) was only running the tires very briefly before I lifted my KJ...my bald Coopers HAD to go! well...two were bald...other two had 6/32 on em, so they were pretty much worthless as well.

dumb question . . .

Can someone explain the difference between MT/AT/MTR tires?

KKJim, I like the look, and it sounds like it is functional. I know a ton of people on this board wondered what it would look and function like with that size tire. I have seen the question asked many times in this forum. So why Mudd feels it necessary to be such a [insert name here] about it is beyond me. Some people are just angry. Pathetic really.

But thanks for the pics, I have been checking back looking to see how it came out. Any updates would be much appreciated. Especially if you take it on some more trying conditions or 4WD.

An HT tire (Highway Tread) is designed specifically for street use, like the BF Goodrich Long Trail. It's not meant for anything more serious than an unpaved driveway.
Image

An all-terrain tire is designed to be a street-friendly, quasi-off-road tire. The tread lugs are usually spaced out more than a typical street tire, but are usually pretty quiet and retain good manners on pavement
Image

An MT (Mud Terrain...the Wrangler MT/R is an example) usually has very little siping, thick lugs spaced far apart for better off road traction and self-cleaning properties, but sacrifices street manners (wet traction, noise) in favor of playing-in-the-dirt fun
Image

Make sense?

     young pups are so funny to watch them play

[b]NOW TO zoso7374

not angry at all , just seen 100s of people want the biggest tire they can put in a wheel well and then not be able to go over a speed bump without hitting something. I made some of the same mistakes 35 years ago, so I know people want to see the bigger tires but without a proper lift it is not always the best route.
You have to have enough room for the tire to stuff up in the fenderwell to work off road Now if it is for a week then OK but...come on use some common sense here don't think you can run it forever with out some problems

ALSO zoso7374 I could explain to you the difference in MT/AT/MTR but until you apologize for calling me an _________ and pathetic forget it
and I do know the difference after selling Goodyear, Firestone, BF Goodrich , Dunlop and others for over 12 years, whoops wait I just saw where you are from

SO LIGHTEN UP "DUDE" AND STOP CALLING PEOPLE NAMES, ITS ALL IN FUN HERE

Based on your use of 'smileys' and your ridiculous "You're from NJ" reference, I have no desire to apologize. But take your own advice, this is all for fun and good information from good people. You are the one that came in here and stomped all over the guys thread because you "didn't understand". I don't think the point of the thread was for YOU to understand why he wants bigger tires on his rig, and he made it abundantly clear to everyone here (except for you) that he understands the issues. Your explanation of wheel well room and off road issues . . . do u really think that is necessary? There isn't a person here that doesn't understand all that. If you are simply coming here to provide info or questions like everyone else, this doesn't happen.

Ohhhh c'mon, the Joisey jokes are a must-have on any Jeep forum!

Tom has an abrasive sense of humor, and somehow (Gee, dunno how) I get it
That NJ comment meant no harm;)

Just call him a hillbilly backwoods Ohioan and everything will be fine
