Vegas Wheeling & Fun Run, Dec 6 & 7th

Did we ever pick a location? I know I want to go...not sure about wife though, she is still sluggish form the last time

I am going to go scouting trails south of town if I ever get a break :evil:

. There are all kinds of dirt roads out that way but I don't know if any are worthy of a group ride or not. Last time I flew out of town I noticed a power line road that heads straight south from Blue Diamond somewhere and goes through clear to Death Valley I think. Also, if we were to use Goodsprings as a sort of starting point you can go north to Potosi Mountain, west to Ragged Peak or South to Devil Mountain. I know that there are trails out there but I have never been on them. I will try to get some recon done in the next couple of weeks.

Here is the link to a potential route. http://tinyurl.com/45z6pf It starts at Red Rock, goes over Potato Ridge, down through Mountain Springs Recreation Area, a short jaunt down highway 160 and then over Wheeler pass. Total run time would probably be 7 or 8 hours. Wheeler Pass is kind of fun to do in the dark too. Anyway, just an idea. There is a good spot to stop for a break near some old charcoal kilns. With the exception of some fun technical stuff on Potato Ridge the rest is pretty easy stuff. Anyway, this is just an idea. I will post up more as I get a chance to do some scouting around.

I just found a trail on Backpacker.com over on the East side of town that takes you up to several old mines and has a fair amount of geode hinting on it. Thinking I might check it out in about 2 weeks. If we do potato again wife is definitely staying home, lol.

This is sounding good. If a couple of you can put something together and then be there to lead it, that would be great! 7-8 hrs-ish sounds like the max I am thinking we would want for the trip. The closer it can end up to Vegas the better for those that want to head to town afterward for night time fun, dinner, lodging, etc. Looks to be close enough to Vegas that it would work well too.

You guys call it and I am sure we can get some folks to show. I am looking forward to a trip out that way.

The Potato Ridge portion of my suggested route is the only place that would give them trouble. There are a couple of tight spots that the KJ's made it through but there are bypasses too. I can lead if this is the route we take. I have been over them both a couple of times now since they are close to home.

I like the idea of the old mines that xodius mentioned. We will be able to put something together for sure. Here are a few questions that I would like anyone and everyone to chime in on so that we can make this as fun for everyone as possible;

Will you be staying on the Strip? If not, what area of town? I am sure all the locals here can chime in on places to stay if you need recommendations.

Are you driving in that day (in other words what time to we want to meet)?

Do we want to do an organized group meal at some point or just eat on the fly?

What level of difficulty are we looking for (based on the standard 1 - 5 scale)?

How much trail time do you want (minimum and maximum)?

Okay. So it looks like we are agreed on Dec. 6th. I am assuming the "out of towners" will be staying somewhere Friday night and meeting up Saturday morning for the run. The Suncoast Casino is running a winter special with weekend rooms for $79 a night and you get $20 in food credit and $20 free slot play or match play. It's about 10 minutes from the entrance to Red Rock Canyon. It's in a nice part of town too.

Let's assume the above is correct and we are running the trail that I proposed above. One of my restaurants is close to Suncoast/Red Rock and we can meet up for a group dinner after the run. So let's get a head count on who's in:

1) Kirk (wife will probably join us for dinner)

The run sounds great but my plans have changed. I have to be in Vegas that weekend and I would love to get away from the rodeo events on the 6th but I will be flying into town and my Jeep won’t fit in my luggage. If anyone has an empty seat I would love to ride shot gun. I could get an early taxi from my hotel on the strip to meet at your hotel of choice.

Did we ever pick the trails? Also as a FYI, Potato will be covered in Snow by then due to altitude. Or at least has been in the past. Looked like we got a little snow this past weekend, I hit a few trails with my Mom, her first time, and had a blast.

If my tranny is still working I will be up for it, not sure on the wife though
