So I bought a tranny temp gauge and an oil pressure gauge today. A few questions for you experts.

1) I'm assuming I will have to remove the idiot light sensor to replace it with the sensor that came with the gauges. So will that leave the idiot light on all the time? Will removing the OEM sensor affect the computer in anyway? Is there a way to leave the idiot light sensor in and install the new sensor?

2) Where have you all been mounting gauges? The pillar mounts I have seen wont work because I have the handle on the pillar.

For #1,you will need to get a "T" fitting so as to put both the OEM and the new oil pressure fitting into the block.Yes the idiot light would be on all the time and the engine propally will run funny since the PCM uses the oil pressure sensor to help regulate how the engine runs.

Before I go looking, can you point me to where the sensor is installed?

Isn't it right next to the oil filter?

There is an adapter for sale on eBay.

This place sells pods for the A-pillar.

I saw these. Problem is my pillar has the handle and I would like to keep it on.

The oil pressure sensor is just above the oil filter.

Everyone has the handle... you just cut it off to put the a pillar mount on. One guy got real clever and moved the handle and pods around and now has both the handle and the pillar gauges.

I bought an aluminum three-pod mount off a member who is not around any more. It sits on the dashboard above the instrument cluster. You can see it on my cardomain page.

Others have manufactured similar. The last I saw was made of wood and looked real sharp, it sat on top of the center AC vents.

My other thought would be too put three small gauges right down where the 12v power source is. I think you could probably remove the bezel and work something out of fiberglass to mount them. You'd just have to angle them up slightly.

Since the Oil is a pressure gauge the t fitting should be ok but for the tranny temp, the documentation specifically says not to use a t... any suggestions?

I called and talked to a Jeep mechanic today. He verified that if you disconnect the OEM Transmission temp sensor it will affect shifting. He said to add an aftermarket gauge you need to take the tranny pan off, drill a hole in it and mount the sensor that way.

I am no expert, but in my previous life, I was a bit of an import tuner. I had a 2000 Celica GTS and the cool kids who put oil presure gauges in their Celicas put the senders on the end of a short length of braided hose. This was done to prevent damage to the sender from vibraitons resulting in being mounted directly to the block via t fitting.

Maybe things have changed, but back in the day, the senders were always breaking under the hood after a few months if you didn't do this. I imagine the situation would be more severe in an off-road vehicle.
I still have all the plumbing I bought from Summit Racing and I would use it in my KJ if I ever add the gauges.

I am not sure that my Eurolite blue carbon fiber ectro-luminecent oil and turbo boost guages will fit my KJ's off-road motif though.

No expert here either but from what I read, you dont want to put the temperature sensor on a t and i would assume that means a hose as well because to get an accurate reading, it said you need to have the sensor in moving fluid, a T or hose would not allow the fluid to flow as freely as it would being mounted directly in the pan.

But what do I know :?: :?: :?:

The tranny pan is the worst place to mount a trans temp sensor, your reading will be way off.You can tap into the trans cooler fed line(the one that is coming from the tranny) to get a more acurate reading, the closer to the trans the better.
