well the BFG KM2's are certainly nice tires, but after one week, they're so freakin' loud i have just about had it with them... These 10-ply tires are very beefy adn look great, but they are killing my mileage and they are unbearable at the speeds i spend most of my time at: 30 to 40 mph while commuting.... I don't wanna give 'em up, but unless i find a way to deaden the resonance in the cabin of these mudders spinning on the asphalt, i may hafta trade them back in soon for some REVO's......

So, anyone expirimented with Dynamat in thier interiors? I've heard good things about this stuff and am hoping it may provide enough of a sound barrier between the tires and the cabin

Maybe get another set of rims and tires? One for road and one for off road.

Sound proofing will do nothing to reduce the tire noise, not in a unibody vehicle. As far as mpg's you need to regear to gain back what was lost when you went to taller tires, weight has some effect but not as much as the overall hieght differenc. You may say there are not all that taller then stock but then you got to determine the overall outside Circumference of the stock tires and your new tires, there's a vast difference between the 2 and that is about 75% of your mpg loss with the weight being the other 25%.

This is the most logical answer to begin with. I've never figured out why more people don't have two sets of tires. It just makes sense.

Because the enormise pain in the rear it is,plus when you get the urage to wheel then you need to go home and jack the vehicle up,remove to junk tires and put on the good tires, then reverse the process when your done offroading.

Personally I like loud tires, lets me know they are still there, plus I'm almost legally deaf anyways.

I wheel way too much to be swapping sets of tires and wheels all the time. So to me, 2 sets makes absolutely no sense. Plus if I have street tires on and I am driving down the road and see some good trails I wanna explore, what then? Off road excursions are always a planned out thing for me.

Keep the mudders and get used to them or go back to ATs or street tires and stay on the road. There has yet to be a tire invented that can truly perform off road like an MT and act like a street tire on pavement. Either way you have to decide if you wanna live with the consequences. Better off road or better on.

my BFG AT's are very very quiet (i cant hear them) and have taken me everywhere i needed to go. went on a run with a bunch of KJ's and a TJ rubicon last thanksgiving and i was the only one with AT's.. made it everywhere they did and it was MUDDY and GREASY. however there is no replacement for a mud tire. if your planning on wheeling at all.. keep the mudders (my next set will be swampers)... if it's mostly on road but want to go offroading every now and again i would strongly suggest an aggressive AT tire. no sound quieting material will cover the sound of your tires

you will get use to it, my Irok's are loud at the same speeds as you but after having them since december now, they realy don't bother me, although I don't run them everyday just 1-2 times a month

plus it let's others know you mean business

I'm sure you'll make the right decision that suits your driving habits

check your psi
you want no more than about 35 psi for a bone stock KJ

more psi = harder tire
bricks make more noise than beach balls

or
my usual answer to noise
turn up the radio
if I can fade out bias ply swampers you can fade out those

to be on your side we have MTR's on the KJ and I dont drive it but maybe once a week
I still after 2 years notice the hum ,my wife who drives t daily does not notice :D

My co-workers new lifted FJ has the same tires in 285's; it makes almost no noise whatsoever on the road. I attributed it to either:

a. Better sound absorbing material in the vehicle
b. The actual frame the FJ is built on is isolating the sound and vibration from the rest of the vehicle
c. Both

The Brand new Rubicon's also perform the same way with the Mud tires they come with...

OK, so next question: what do I gotta do to "re-gear" and what's it gonna cost me?

darn I love the looks and potential of these tires....

Thanks guys

I am running at a warm 42psi..... Max load rating is 80... Trying to keep a balance of MPG's/road noise...

Your answer would be "B".

Regearing will run about $500 for the F/R gears with install kits, then depending on your local labor rate anywhere from $600-$1500 for install, the killer is the front diff needs to be removed to regear and that is about 6 labor hours alone.

Actually a higher psi will cause less noise from the smaller contact patch then a lower psi setting.Plus the more aggressive the tire you will get more noise from "lug slap".

Not to thread jack, but Hypothetically, If you did have two sets of tires, and you have your everyday tires on... You see a trail, and want to "explore". What stops you again? Why don't you have a "less" agressive AT tire on, then have the more agressive ones at home?

I agree with the guy that said turn the radio up. but when something else is going wrong, now you have tires, and a loud radio... not gonna hear anything else.

Thats just my 2 cents.

It’s obvious that everyone uses their KJ for different purposes and priorities. I’m about to start towing and driving a lot of highway miles, therefore I want a good A/T tire that will be conducive to these conditions without sacrificing what my Jeep was intended to do. The A/T tire, as indicated by 2006 KJ, can be an excellent all-purpose tire (on-road and off-road). At the same time, I’m in the process of wanting a good off-road/winter tire. For this reason, in my opinion, it would be a better choice for me to have two sets of tires for two different purposes. In my case scenario, I am trying to avoid spending $900 + dollars on a nice set of off-road tires and turn around and unintentionally chew off the rubber on black pavement. My ultimate plan is to run BFG T/A KO's on my stock wheels and BFG KM2's on my Moab wheels. Right now I still have a lot of stock rubber left on my stock wheels and plenty of free Bridgestone Duelers on the Moabs that I purchased. So, trying to exhaust my resources, I will milk all the rubber I can get before making these purchases.

If the shipping wouldn't be outrageous, I'd trade my LT Silentarmors for your KM2s. They're the same size and probably have about the same wear. They've been in storage for about a year but they're still almost new. about 7K miles.

edit: Oh, and the SilentArmors really are silent. They're quieter than a lot of ATs I've heard. And yet perform surprisingly well... not so much in mud but just about everything else they are alright in. Loved them in snow.

We have a Cooper dealer here in town, so many people have COOPER tires including the discoverer ATR, S/T-C, ST, and STT. I have never heard one bad thing about any of the Cooper tires. The STT is the only one that I really like.

why not get 15" wheels and tires (more tire height) for off roading and stick the 17" to street use... or you could sell me your 17"s

I am on a lot of different forums, Rubicon Owners Forum (ROF) two Toyota ones, one Ford Ranger, Expedition Portal etc and have always found most all people have great things to say abot the Cooper STTs, good all around tire, some seem to think they squirm some when new on a vehicle but after a 100 miles or so they are fine. I am looking at those and a couple of others when I go 265/75s
