and I didn't get into trouble for it.
I traded my wife's Infinity G20 for an '89 240SX. It was just about a fair trade, my wife loves the 240's so now I have another expensive toy.
Go me!
Now I am working on an engine swap. :wink:

No worries, the big annoying coffee can will be coming off very soon. I hate that noise as much as anyone.
When the guy was going over what he has done to this, I was going over what I will be UN-doing to it. The muffler is the first to go. I don't need noise to have power.

Sorry, I got excited. my other car is an 87 300ZX turbo, its kinda like the the fat chick that carries it well. she's small, looks great, but when it comes to fun time you just can't throw her around like you want to. A nice 240 is the prom queen that you can rock out in front of your friends

I'm still kicking myself for trading in the '90 240SX Coupe on the '98 Cherokee. Should have kept it when I bought the Cherokee instead. It's been 10 years and I still miss that car.

Hey, speaking of this new car. How many people are mechanically inclined to tell me what is wrong with the engine, by a "detailed" description?

So when its at idle, coasting, and trans braking, everything is fine and dandy. But under accelleration, there is a loud, consistent with the RPM's, knocking, coming from the top (under the valve cover?) of the engine.
It will do it when I pull on the throttle cable, and hit about 2500 RPM's. and only when I am driving. I was talking to the local mom n' pop mechanic today, and he said from listening, that it sounds like the cam.

What would the cam be doing that would do this? Upon changing the cam, do you guys think I should just do the rest of the engine (160k)?

My wife is saving for an engine swap now, so hopefully it will be cool until next year. I will solve all current issues, to keep it going. Wintering it in a heated garage, but I will drive it in the garage once a week. Just to keep it going. Just to keep the apartment managers, and all the yuppies in this place happy.

Anything for me on this? anyone?

Okay, again this is for the mechanically inclined.
I have been reading on a 240 forum, and this problem seems to be more on the normal side.
Last night, on my way home, I got stupid. I took off from a light, a little on the quick side, and got the tires spinning. Yes that was dumb. I know.
but after that, when I got to the next light, it wanted to stall, and the oil light blinked on and off. That was it. I caught the attempt at a stall, and goosed the throttle, and it kept going.
SO that tells me, it didn't have the pressure it needed.
I got home, and got online, and started to read.
People with the same problem have been doing a couple of different things. First, running Seafoam in the oil, to release a sticky lifter/valve.
Second, using a 2qt./2qt. mix of Oil, and ATF. at idle for 1 hr. to do the same as 1.
Third, replaceing lifters. With a cost of $25-45 per lifter, at 12 lifters, this is not in my book of things to do. I will just replace the engine.

Has anyone had luck with either of the first two? On any other vehicles?

Don't know. I tend to replace parts rather than use snake oil to fix problems that are only going to come back.

Agree. Sounds like the hard parts are on the way out. Time for some new ones. Don't forget to run Great FULL Syn products in the new engine though!! :wink:

As a matter of fact, I used the engine flush from Amsoil, today. Impressive on the amount of carbon that did come out of the exhaust pipe. But unfortunatly it did nothing for the sound.
I will be looking for new parts tonight. I think it would be best to just replace everything, and have the engine professionally built from here on out. I am good with doing the work, I just don't have the time or space that allows me to do any of this.

Edit...So i have been thinking. This is too weird for me. WHY does it only make the noise on accellerations, Could be a lifter, yes. But, the guy did mention that he had the computer tuned for 87 octane.
THen later he mentioned that it has a ticking lifter...

My thought... Could the timeing be off>? could it have been a failed attempt at reprogramming the computer?
