What is a good locker/lsd combo (front and rear) for severe winter/ice situations. Are open diffs better in winter storms??

DTT front and rear, or DTT front and DL rear would both be awesome, if the Aussie comes out Ill be DTT front and Aussie rear but if not Ill be DTT front and rear.

Having a LSD or locker will make it much easier to drive in winter storms

Per a previous thread, to me the best locker setup for winter driving would be ARB because you are in complete control of when to engage and disengage it. Sometimes the LSD or power activated setups can sneak up on you in very slick conditions and actually make things worse. A good example if this would be a standing start, off-camber, on an icy road. In this situation you really DONT want the LSD to engage, because if it does you'll find yourself doing an "about-face" pretty quick. I think being able to toggle the locker on and off again in a situation like this would be beneficial. If I'm wrong, someone pls chime in and clarify...

Wouldn't "off camber" and icy cause it's own problems no matter what you have?

It possibly could, but with one wheel spinning you can control it sometimes more than having them both locked and spinning towards the low side of the road. One of those 6 of one a half dozen of the other type deals.

My vote is for an ARB, better control as has been noted before

What would be a good deal on a Detroit Locker?

In what situation should a ARB locker be activated?? I want better traction when I'm on the freeway on snowy and icy roads. Should I only have a ARB in the rear, and have a open front.

I would recommend going with DTT front and rear bc for the 2 of them its not much more than 1 ARB, I like the idea of it or the DL in the rear bc I know its always working I dont have to worry about the ice on the road and wether or not I should turn it on, plus I dont have near the money for an ARB

just a thought though

agreed. The example i gave is tricky no matter what you are using. However is does sorta show that the ability to force your diff "open" can be very valuable in these conditions. In this scenario, one tire wold be using all of its available traction to try and move the vehicle, while the other tire would be using all of its available traction to "holding the road". In this example if the the other tire kicks in due to the low traction, you have both tires using traction for trying to move, and nothing left for holding the road. with the factory LSD, i run into this every winter and end up needing 4wd to pull myself out

don't get me wrong, I'm sure the other products mentioned would work great too. Just throwing my toughts out there on the topic.... if money was not an issue, i would do the arbs for sure.

I'm thinking the best combo is DTT rear and ARB front. Since I don't have the option of Full-time, I want something that will keep my tires planted on the road when its icy. In that case should I activate my front ARB? How will it act around turns on the street or curves around the highway??

curves will not be a problem really its the tight turns say in town that any thing locked up may skip/hop some, but if you are in town like that just switch it off.
Mine will be the opposite of yours, TT up front / ARB rear

If you have selec trac (fulltime 4 wheel drive), then I would say ARB in the front and ARB in the rear

Isn't that what you would suggest anyway?

Not necessarily. With the selec-trac, it makes sense to go ARB in the front and rear. With command trac, I can see more case scenarios where a TT might come in handy. jeepkj02 doesn’t have ESP to worry about either, which opens more possibilities. However, the way my Dad always explained it to me was like this: “Son, if you ever get stuck out in a snow or ice storm and you have the ability to lock your lockers, at least you can put one tire off to the side of the road and the other tire on the road and still have traction.” So from that day on, it just made sense to me that having a true locker would take care off those extreme situations. The majority of the time, your factory 4 wheel drive system will work efficiently and effectively. Even though most of you hate the ESP, I will remain in the minority who likes the ESP function. If I need extra 4 wheel drive assistance, I will always have the ARB‘s.
