SO after all this trouble I am going to go with the Firestone Destination A/T's. I am getting them for $110 a piece balenced mount etc. I am now wondering before I order them should I get the 255/70's o not. I have the 2.5" lift on it but I am not sure it will fit. Some of the guys there said that the 255's would fit others said that I should get the 245's I dont know....What do you all think? I trust you all more then them.

Personally, considering that Firestone had the massive recall ordeal back in the late 90s and almost sunk their company because of it...I would say that today Firestone tires would be the MOST dependable and most quality controlled tires on the market. Do you guys think Firestone would risk having that same thing happen to them again? If it happened again their company would be done for. I'd say all Firestone ATs coming out of the factory now days are top-notch tires.

My mother is running the Firestone Destination ATs on her Jeep and I like how they look. They are priced great too. I am considering them myself. I would go with a 255/70 if you have the 2.5" lift. You'll be glad you did.

GOOD NEWS!!!!! I oredered my tires. I'm getting 245/70/16 Firestone Destination A/T's I will get them tomorroe and then try to get some pics up for you all to google over. j/k I just really wanted to thank everyone so very much for all of their help. Though I may not have used them I do thank you for them because every comment I have researched to see if it was useful for my applications. Once again thank you all so very much. This site is such a help to me and many people because of the word of mouth used. Feel free to keep posting about tires so anyone can use it for the same reason I did. Talk to you all later.

I want to thank everyone for their input also. I too am looking to get rid of those stock badyears. I have been trying to decide between Revo, BFG TA KO, and the Firestone Destination AT. I don't have a lift, yet, and mostly will be driving highway and a little off-road/beach driving. Because of cost and the super ratings on TireRack.com I have chosen to go with the Destination ATs. I agree that Firestone can't afford to have problems again so they should really be making high quality tires now.

We just got our first taste of winter in VA today and I'm very nervous driving with the Goodyear's as I've already slipped around on damp roads. So I plan to get the Firestone's installed before the next wintery mix comes. Santa will be bringing tire money. I'll be upgrading from 215/75-16 to 235/70-16. Unfortunatly, we tend to get the icy mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain which no tire will be great on but most anything will be better than those Badyears - they're great on my Corvette but not on the Libby.

By the way, I'm impressed so far with my destination A/T's eventhough I despise A/T's. So far they have ate everything I've thrown at them without a mark. Even that sharp a$$ed flint rock. They perform way better than I ever expected in every terrain.

If you are real concerned about the side wall you better order an LT. The 245/75's or better will fit.

I was planning to go with the 235/70-16s as I thought that would be the largest tire I could fit without rubbing issues. That's the largest tire size installed from the factory on 2004s. I don't have a lift and will be using the stock rims.

Using 1010tires.com calculator I found these comparisons:
Stock 215/75-16 is 28.69 inch diameter.
235/70-16 is 28.95 inches.
245/70-16 is 29.50 inches.
245/75-16s were over 3% increase from stock and not recommended.

The 245/70 is almost an inch larger than my whimpy stock tires. If that is ok, I don't mind going larger. I just want to avoid any rubbing issues and the need to do any trimming or cutting. I've read somewhere on this forum that the 2004 and newer Libbys don't have as much wheel clearance as the prior years do. I haven't ordered my tires yet, so input is very much appreciated. Thanks!!

no rubbing at all on normal driving conditions
while offroading, yes - it rubs sometimes - minimal

Cool. Thanks KJ-BOL. I think I'll go with the 245s. They're only $4 more than the 235s. I'm hoping my Uncle will install them for me, he has his own service station, and that will save $$$ on the alignment and other extra charges. My local Firestone store wants $520 for 4 tires (235s), balanced, aligned, etc. I can get the set from TireRack for $400-430 (235s or 245s) shipped and hopefully my Uncle won't charge me much to align and balance.

By the way I'm going to keep my stock tires in hopes that I can sell them and get a little money. If anyone is interested in the stock 215s

they will be for sale after Christmas. (Just 4 for now. I'll get the spare replaced later). If I can find someplace that buys used tires locally I will sell to them.

I went with the 245 70s and no rubbing (unlifted). Actually I can not tell a difference in the way it runs, powerwise. Speedometer is about right so no problems there. My cousin has a tire store, been in the business since the early 70s and he said my set of Destinations balanced up really good, almost no weight. I have always run really aggressive treads Mudders, Ground Hawgs etc and of course these do not go like those in the mud but for what they are for, they are great! As far as Firestone having problems yes they did but I still think half the problem was the stupid people buying SUVs and never checking air pressure or knowing how to drive something taller , just my thoughts.
I think that anyone that puts the Firestone Destinations A/Ts on will like them

firestone destination LE? Ive got those and they run smooth on the highway and are meant for people who do rarely any offroading and show great performance in snow

Thanks again everyone. Thanks JeepJunky33 for the pictures. Nice looking tires on that Libby. I'm hoping to do some light offroading this coming year so I would like to have a little more than street tires so I hadn't looked real hard at the Destination LEs.

I still would love to get the BFG AT KOs but just can't justify the extra cost. They are awesome looking tires though. That's the look I'd like to have for my KJ. The KOs and Destination ATs were both rated 8.6 on TireRack.com and $134 vs $89 I have to go with the Destinations which aren't bad looking but not as agressive-looking as the KOs. One thing about the KOs that concern me is that several reviews mentioned that the tire wear was uneven. Maybe for those people who complained about that didn't have proper alignment or balancing. I do see the KOs on a lot of trucks and suvs with lots of great reviews.

For the price and not planning to do any hard core offroading the Destinations should do just fine. I'll probably ride the stocker friendly trails and do some OBX beach driving.

Ok folks. I need your help one more time. I have an appointment in the morning to have the 245/70SR16s installed. I was just calling around to see if anyone would purchase the old Goodyears and I have someone talking me out of jumping from 215/75s to the 245/70s because of transmission shift timing, speedometer readings and possible anti-lock braking problems. Before talking to this guy today, I had called my Jeep dealer about calibration to compensate for larger tires. It will cost $80. Cost aside, will changing tire size really cause all kinds of problems like this guy is telling me? Will the Dealer calibration take care of all these problems? At least this guy is $20 less than the Firestone store I'm going to tomorrow. I know many of you have changed to larger tires, so this can't be as bad as he's trying to tell me it is, right?

Well first of all, you mentioned that you love the look of the BFG AT KO tires, but you don't like the price. I totally agree. I've owned those tires before and they are a good tire (except for mud) but they are VERY expensive. If you like that look though, you might honestly want to consider the General Grabber AT-2. That is a tire that looks almost identical (if not better) than the BFG AT KO, will perform just as good (if not better) than the BFG AT KO, and it costs literally almost HALF what the BFG tire costs. You can get the General Grabber AT-2 in a 245/70-16 for about $90/each. The BFG in the same size is running around $140/each. Multiplied by 4 tires, that is a HUGE difference!! But I think you would love the Generals.

As far as tranny shift points, etc... You are going with a tire that is about 1" taller if you put a 245/70-16 on there. That will slightly throw off your speedo, but not enough to justify $80 to recalibrate. It'll be reading about 1 mph too slow at 35, 2 mph too slow at 55, and about 3 mph too slow at 75. Not a big deal really. Your odometer will count mileage a tad slower than actual as well. It will not change your tranny shift points enough that you'll really notice. And it won't damage anything.

Thanks LibertyCRD. I don't know why this guy made such a big deal over the size change. He also tried to talk me into going with 235s but I've decided to go with 245s anyway. Everyone else that I've asked including on this forum says I shouldn't have any rubbing issues with the 245/70s so majority rules.

Those General's look sweet. I'll check around for them. Right now my best price on a set of 4 Destination ATs out the door is $449 so I may stay with those.

I too jumped from 215/75's to 245/70's. I had my speedo recalibrated, twice. Let me explain. First time I went from the 215/75's to a 225/75 Destination M/T. The guy at the Firestone shop had the computer, and took care of it for me (no charge). Only took a couple of minutes. A few weeks later, I had the Destination's swapped out for 245/70 Revo's. I forgot to have him check the speedo again. I figured I was ok, as there was only a difference of 2 in the RPM's (706 vs. 704 for the Revo's). Some time later I was going by one of those speed signs that shows how fast you are going. When my speedo read 65, the sign said 69. I ended up taking it to the dealer, and they charged me $40. When I went by the sign again, I was right on the money.
As far as shifting, I can't remember what it was like before I got my tires, but I can't stand it now. There didn't seem to be any difference between 706 and 704 RPM's.

Hi are You stating it shifts poorly now after getting the speedo calibrated? I jumped from 235's to 245's and did not get it recalibrated yet.Should i bother? When i speed i know i'm speeding and when not i just coast along.not really worried about speed traps...?

I went from235s to 245s and never did anything to mine at all. After I had them installed went and tried them out and then drove the 250 miles home with no problems with shifting or speedometer off that much. Maybe I should be concerned but at this point I think it is doing great.If others have had problems I would like to hear about them though.

I can't remember if it shifted poorly before I had the speedo done, as it's been bugging me for some time now. Also, it seems like everyone I talk to about it (other KJ owners) agrees that theirs is the same (with NO changes to the speedo). I just wanted the speedo as accurate as possible (I'm kinda wierd like that).
