I turn my lights off in traffic here in America for the same reason, and I have seen many heavy truck operators do it was well. To me, it seems like common decency. Oh wait, our society is giving that up in favor of 'capitalism' as the almighty.

EDIT:
Before someone tries to twist my words to suit their own political agenda, I am not in favor of communism. Making a profit is not evil. Running your own business is not evil. But reckless pursuit of profit to the detriment of your local society IS evil. Our own business culture has been steaming headlong to that end for quite some time. Little things like common decency toward your fellow citizens fall away in favor of 'cost cutting' in situations like that.

The guy who serves you gas? It's another job that needs a person, and offers a service - Keeping my car clean and me out of the rain. I appreciate that service, I don't NEED to pump my own fuel. And reality says that NO, it doesn't cost more for the fuel... New Jersey typically has some of the cheapest fuel in the NorthEast, if not most of the East Coast, and the rest of them are all self-service. Good luck trying to get Gomer to come out of the C-store in the south to pump for you in a pouring rain!

I would love to try the Japanese system someday. It really sounds like they have elevated customer service to an art form, something which has vanished in the USA since the days of Texaco 'Circle-service' long ago.

What just happened on Wall Street was criminal and by the time we all find out what really happened a lot of us will be generating or enriching Biomass and Our descendants will know more of the truth than we know now since those who covered it up will also be making their contribution to Biomass.

Those who drove up the price of oil may have done so with out breaking any laws, but were very ethically challenged.

For the Wall Street problem I see two options:
1) Prosecution including any elected officials of any party that were in on it.
2) Turn the problem over to Wild Life Management and issue permits.

For those who drove up the price of oil:
1) Develop every viable energy source and give them some old fashion competition. I for one will not cry when the Saudi Royal Family can no longer afford their month long non medical physical therapy sessions in five star French Hotels.
2) Turn all the Lawyers and Politicians who try to obstruct viable energy development over to Wild Life Management and issue permits. This includes the local jerk politicians who will not let me put a solar panel on my garage!

finally below $4.00 in the Chicago area. I paid $3.99 for the first in a long time. Still .50 to .60 higher than u.r.

I like those solutions, but I favor #2 in both.

Let's handle this in a "Shakespearian" manner - No bag limit on lawyers.

Here too. On a recent Puget Sound visit the prices were 20 to 40 cents less.

Yesterday I drove to Buffalo, NY and found it at $3.76 when I stopped to fill up my gasser. Still at $4.06 in Rochester, NY. Should have taken a large storage tank with me!

I saw $3.45 this past weekend. Unfortunately, that was at a station that's not in my normal daily path. Just gotta wait for the other stations to catch-up...err, catch-down.

Scumbags are still charging 3.69-4.19 for diesel here in Savannah, and no less than 3.59 elsewhere in Georgia. But I drove down to Jacksonville Monday, and the Flying J had RUG for 2.59!

They also had lines 5-deep at least at every pump. Thankfully I had my motorcycle, and was able to skip the line b/c some guy's truck was blocking a pump while he filled his boat.

It would be nice if they dumped the prices on diesel too... Oh wait - this is market manipulation right before the election (just like 4 years ago and 2 years ago at the same times) and the masses drive gas not diesel.

Notice how Road Construction projects get completed just before elections?

Surprisingly, I HAVE noticed road crews out where there have been only barrels working for MONTHS... It makes sense now that you mention it. What I find funny (and sad) is the short memory the oil industry thinks the public has. That they would believe that the public will accept their "supply and demand of the moment" arguments about the price increases, despite the consistency of the timing year-on-year. I have heard more and more people commenting about how the run-ups are always in the same times each year, and how the drops are never followed so fast as the increases... And MANY more are saying (without me saying anything) that the oil companies are manipulating the markets.

The ONLY hope of the oil industry is to dump the price now as much as possible before the election, in a bid to keep the Grand Oil Party in power... But I've also seen (and believe) that society has reached a tipping point on energy, and we won't fall for this crap anymore. Too much has been affected in the entire economy by the lack of oversight and general pillaging that has happened.

Shell diesel is $3.19 in Estacada, Oregon and 50 miles away, in Hillsboro, Oregon, it's $4.45 at a Chevron
