Did you make sure you replaced the o-ring on the main filter? Install it correctly? The 45RFE seems to have a issue after the pan is dropped and needs a Transmission Quick Relearn done to it to operate correctly again,of course that's a dealership trip there.

Does this have to be done everytime you change your fluid (drop the pan)?

Are you sure it's not your exhaust pipe hitting the skid plate? (on the drivers side)
Mine was doing the exact same thing, especially when I put it in reverse.
I added some washers and the problem went away.

Just a thought....

Yes. A new o-ring was installed on the main filter (the one that came with the new filter), and seated correctly after a little bit of a battle.

There's no way to 'teach' the relearn other than going to the dealer? Any idea of a ballpark price they charge for that?

I did the same tranny service myself last week and mine feels fine now (and also felt fine right afterwards). The seal was a huge pain to get out as it's combination metal and rubber pressed to fit, but I can see how not replacing it would be a bad thing. From what I can tell, it forms a collar around the neck of the filter and prevents all the fluid flow from bypassing the filter going into (or possibily out of) the sump. The instructions were very clear in that you are to remove the old seal, seat the new one in its place with a mallet, socket driver, etc, THEN put the new filter in, suggesting that if you try to install the seal along with the filter, damage may result.

<edit>Since you didn't say you had a CRD, you probably have a different transmission, so nevermind the above. It may not be valid for you :)</edit>

The exhaust pipe on the early KJ's sticks out pretty far.
Even with a bunch of washers, I still get rattles every now and then. The fact that I bent my superskid all to heck doesn't help either.

Glad I could help :D

wow, I had the opposite happen. I had a rock stuck between the pipe and skid plate. It made a wierd noise until I removed it.

The skid I had was already 'reshaped' to accommodate for the exhaust pipe. The only thing I can think of is that when we changed the fluids, we put the gasket that came with the filter (with a little bit of RTV on both sides) on the pan instead of whatever sealer the dealer put on the last time it was changed. The gasket we put on was probably a little bit thicker than what we scraped off... probably pushing against the skid more than what it did before.

I'll be picking up some washers tonight. Thanks again! :D

What those moron's at the dealership (as does the factory) use is silicone.

Glad to hear you found the problem relatively quick.

As for this trans relearn thing????... I guess my trans knew better than to loose it's mind on me. Image

Huh?!?
Odd...perhaps I need to pay a visit to my stealership tomorrow.
What're the symptoms of NOT having it relearned? are they permanent-until-they-do-the-relearn-again?

More importantly..is this something I can do with a Genesys scanner?

The Genisis scanner can not do the relearn. Most times, not all the time, when you drop the pan on the 45RFE it will shift and act funny and that's when the relearn needs to be done.I've had it done to my tranny 3 times now and it makes a world of difference.

There is nothing wrong with using silicone,it's cheaper, better then gasket, and doesn't get creased or ripped sitting in the box waiting to be bought either.I use RTV in place of a gasket all the time and never had a problem.Cleaning is no big issue either since I have the right tools,RTV is 100000000% easier to remove then a 20 year old gasket.

Another question then. Now that the whole tranny skid noise issue has been resolved, everything else seems to run as normal. I've noticed no difference in how it shifts or runs. Being that all systems seem normal, would you still recommend that a relearn is done?
If it's not acting funny you don't need it,like I said it doesn't happen all the time but is common for the 45RFE.

Actually, I don't know if it's a software issue that the one you used needed updated, but I did the quick learn today on a Genesys. it was cool as hell too!

put it in neutral, it runs through all 5 forward gears, then back down to neutral.

What system package do you have for the Genisis you are using? The one I had access to did not have the ability,I tried.Hopefully at my new job(start tomorrow) the Genisis they have is the next package that may have the ability.

Let me check. My primary job now is keeping a counter from floating away...all I did was plug it in and set it up. Told me to start the engine and put it in neutral, and hold the brake. Let me add that HOLDING THE BRAKE is VERY CRITICAL

Better than a gasket? Silicone won't last 20 years. You might want to rethink that analogy. I just won't do things the cheap way, nor would I ever attempt to use a damaged gasket. Now as for the right tools, a bench grinder and a parts cleaner sink are the best tools to remove either substance.
