I finally went ahead and installed the lift pump.

Went down to local autopart shop and asked for a lift pump, salesman said to me " for which vehicle" and i pointed outside and said to him, " for that Jeep" and he frowned and said, " but that Jeep is injected and we only sell pumps for carburettor motors".

Anyway he went into the storeroom and guess what he came out with , a Facet pump made in the US of A. The equivalent of 40 USD later with all the hardware i needed and ready for some action.

Did the installation in the engine bay and mounted the pump on the battery holder, bolted firmly, nice & neat.

Power from the relay and filed a tiny piece off the fuse box lip to accomodate the grounding wire which i bolted onto the existing grounding next to the battery, nice & neat. Realised that i hadn't bought a fuel hose connector that i would need to join the existing fuel hose to the extension fuel hose coming from the pump. Found an old in line filter that i used from the outboard motor and fitted, has a glass bowl for viewing purposes, nice & neat.

Bled air and fired her up and guess what, idled the same as before, not quieter than before, same amount of turbo lag as before but nice & neat.

When i next have some time , i'll install the pump in front of the fuel tank.

Need to go and get a life now but still luv her.............

Well that's a big surprise. It is amazing to me how susceptible many people are to the power of suggestion. I think that the original lift pump installer on this forum said that he "thought" that his rig ran quieter after the pump was installed and then everyone else had to repeat it. Same thing as the V6 airbox. Someone said that the filter in the stock airbox would get plugged when driving in the rain and then everyone had to jump on board without even stopping to think about it or doing any testing to see if there was actually any air restriction in the rain. I have checked my airbox in the heaviest rain and even though there was a VERY small amount of water at the bottom of the box the filter itself was completely dry. I then tried spraying water directly onto the filter with a garden hose and revved the engine. The water was gone and the filter was completely dry within seconds. My point is that You must be careful what you chose to believe when reading anything on internet forums. If it doesn't make sense or goes against the laws of physics it is probably not a good modification to your vehicle.

The effectiveness of the lift pump is a direct function of the problems you had without it.

some people had constant problems until the the lift pumps were installed.
if you had a lot of problems - the pump fixed them

however there are some people who have had no problems with the stock fuel systems.
if you didn't have problems - the pump made no difference

LOL :P. No. I base my observations on reality. Perhaps I went overboard with my earlier post though. It was not at all constructive and for that I apologize to everyone who reads it.

It's tough to fix something that isn't broke.

Never made any such claim.

Mine is night and day, best mod so far. There is no doubt that it has made a huge difference in power and solved all shuddering. If I still had the air issues, the CRD would be gone by now.

But if you had no issues in the first place, then what would you expect to cure? I will tell you what... future problems with the suction system loosing its prime. The kind that make you get out of the Jeep in the middle of the night looking for a 11mm wrench because your vehicle stalled or lost power (hopefully not in an intersection with a car coming at you). If nothing else, it is piece of mind (and much easier to install the new fuel filter without having to push the little pump 100 times).

Exactly. Luckily (knocks on wood) I haven't really had any of the 'typical' CRD problems. Hence why I haven't really modified it with any of the recommended 'fixes.' However, if I did have problems, I would have probably done the fixes. hell, 55k miles and the only thing I did is probably about 2-3k miles with the ORM, but plugged the MAF back in with no real visible changes.

Whoops, My bad, so sorry. I think that it in fact started here about a year ago. http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... ht=#264460
But anyway I'm trying not to post so many negative things, so sorry about the dig.

Not a big deal really, and I agree with the idea that a person should think modifications through. For me, a lift pump has fixed my air leak problems and allowed me to run two stage fuel filtration with great reliability.

I've removed the pump following this post and reverted to stock fuel supply in the interim. I checked the Facet web site and could not find the model i had purchased in their catalogue. My model is a 40242 and could only find a 40241.This scared me off as i was unable to determine the spec for the pump. What model Facet pump should i use by the way :?:

Perhaps it was good to have tried the pump, will return it for credit, as it gave me the opportunity to inspect the low pressure fuel hoses from the tank to the filter head for leaks. i cut away about 2cm's off the tip of the inlet hose which had a small split in it and refitted.

I bled her and two cranks later she was thanking me for removing the pump by not blowing any smoke from the exhaust, idling like she used too and promises that she would continue not to stutter or shudder at the 55mph danger zone

What did i learn, read the advice, hints and tips that are readily provided on the forum, that's the purpose of it, and decide for yourself if the mod is going to benefit her or not. In my case i was trying to fix something that wasn't broken and thanks to those who had brought this to my attention after my posting 8)

Well i'm off the Auto store to return the pump and maybe have my wings clipped at the same time 8) 8)

Chow chow

I would have left it on. It hurts nothing and fixes a problem which is known to affect many Jeeps. Besides it makes priming a breeze.

I once experienced the problem of fuel starvation on a hot day with less than a 1/4 tank of fuel and have since purchased the FACET but not yet installed it. That failure is not fun particular in heavy traffic with no place to pull off. I will install the FACET sometime but my other solution has been to run with a full tank in hot weather. I would put the FACET back on if I were you.

I intend putting one back but next to the fuel tank this time and power from under the rear seat.

Can someone just confirm the Facet model pump for me as the one i originally purchased was incorrect. :?:

I think i read that BlackLiberty had installed a model 40109 Facet pump.
the one i bought was a 40242.

Are the Facet pumps reliable or should i be looking for something else :?:

I have the one that you mentioned that Black Liberty has 40109. As I recall from my search the main differences were the size and style of the inlet and outlet not so much the pump capacity. Do a google of FACET and you will get to their site which has a chart with the specs of their various pumps.

Thanks i did that but couldn't find the spec for the model i had purchased which was the 40242. The alternative model number is 40105 which does not have the 3/8 fittings.

I've found an interesting article on fuel pumps, check the comments out on the Facet pumps and the fact that they use Carter only - :?

http://www.racetep.com/webfuelspark.html#webfuel

What is the model number for the Carter pump whilst i'm on the topic :?:

Please note on your article - pressure against a gasoline float/needle valve is very different from pressure against the input side of a diesel filter/CP3 pump - apples and oranges.

Point taken - Don't get me wrong here, i'm not having a dig at any specific brand of pump and i suppose that if i Googled Carter or Cummings pumps i'd find something negative about them as well.

Just want to learn from the experiences of those who have done all the research and make sure i do the right thing for peace of mind.
