Chickens!

Yes, that big ol' tom was grown from a chick. Not as big as the one my parents used to have. I think he was over 40 lbs after they prepared him.

My parents have meat chickens, and two pens of layers. There are a few ones that just roam the farm, with the ducks. The ducks think their chickens and don't like to swim in the creek. Go figure.

Little bada$$ rooster. Such a loud mouth. The female turkey in that coup thinks he's hers.

And then there's the chickens that just show up on the farm. Talk about a true free range chicken. Doesn't belong there, but I guess he knows where to get fed.

BTW, the female turkey is laying eggs and my parents are hoping that the eggs will eventually produce a chick or two.

No reason you couldn't, I know people that eat duck eggs.

Problem is ducks and turkeys are not nearly and proliferate layers as chickens are.

Ya, I would like to use one for just one big fried egg.

Imagine the morning after bringing some new girl home, go cook her breakfast, bring one giant fried egg on a plate - sunny side up!

I know ostrich farmers sell em for a couple of bucks each, makes me want to try em.

Ya he's pretty laid back with them, he is only 8 months old and he has spent the last 3 months growing up with them, so he has gotten used to the chickens.

My neighbors two golden retrievers aren't so cavalier about the chickens, they go nuts even just looking through the fence at them.

here is our most recent purchase...... kids' Fair projects
Those chickens wouldn't make it with my dogs, they kill our rabbits if one gets lose.

They are still too young, right now they are about 14 weeks old, pretty much the earliest I can expect to see eggs is 16 weeks, though it looks like the brown ones(welsummers) and the large black one(black jersey giant) mature later.

Really, I don't expect to see eggs in another two weeks, later part of november I will start keeping an eye out for eggs, but it may not be untill late december that I get any.

Once they are all up and laying I will probably get 3-4 eggs a day, at some point I want to get another pullet, which will put me at 6(can only have 6 max in the city).

The welsummers lay an exceptionally large brown egg, but may only lay it once every 2 days.
