Vegas Wheeling & Fun Run, Dec 6 & 7th

State Rodeo Queens from around the US come to Vegas to compete for “Miss Rodeo Queen of America”. The competition ends Saturday December 6th with the new Queen being crowned. My daughter was the Nevada State Rodeo Queen 2 years ago and has been invited to help with some of the events this year. This is the real reason my family is in Vegas on that weekend. A run with LOST would be a good distraction if I can find a ride.

Did we ever pick the trails? Also as a FYI, Potato will be covered in Snow by then due to altitude. Or at least has been in the past. Looked like we got a little snow this past weekend, I hit a few trails with my Mom, her first time, and had a blast.

If my tranny is still working I will be up for it, not sure on the wife though

I talked to the rangers at the MSRA station and they said that early December isn't too bad. Sometimes there's a little snow and sometimes its still dry. Let's plan on Red Rock and Rocky Gap Road for starters and if snow is an issue, we will just go on to Wheeler Pass. I think the summit is just shy of 8000 feet, but the road is pretty good all the way up on the south side. We will have to scout the north side before we commit. It is pretty rutty and if snow is involved it could be iffy. As long as we have several vehicles there wouldn't be any reason why we couldn't pass it though. It would be a good opportunity to get muddy and maybe use a winch or two!!

I'm just saying . . . there could be mud . . . some of the rigs will have winches ready for use . . . so . . . why not rock the mud!

I am going to head out here in a bit and play around. I went south last weekend by Nelson, but there wasn't much that I found down there wheeling wise. A lot of old mines.

Not sure which direction I will head today. Maybe I will head south towards Jean and see what I find

You probably already left, but if you read this post before you go, check out Potosi Mountain area. I know there is a radio tower road on it somewhere. There are some "mountains" listed on the topo map of that area just southeast of Jean that I have been meaning to check out and can never find the time. I would be interested in running some "new" trails on this run, but we are set for the day either way I think.

Ahhhhhh I went to some radio towers just north of Goodsprings. Didn't even get to put it in 4wd. Mostly I just like to get out and explore. This area is all very new to me so its also exciting just to see whats out there.

We just got back from Shoshone, there are some nice trails back there. We even found some old dwellings that are carved out of the rock. Pretty cool. Drive time was about 1 1/2 hours to get there but it was worth it. Next time we go there we will have to leave earlier to hit all the caches on the trail. It is a huge loop...maybe 20-30 miles or so all gravel single lane paths. Very cool. Might be a good spot for a Lost run sometime.

As it stands right now I might not be hitting anymore trails for awhile. The tranny went form ok to WTF rather fast. On our way back it decided to give us a little...entertainment by shaking us for a mile or so, then was fine...then we ate and when we were finally 1 mile form the house it kicked, jumped and shock a little too much for my liking. Monday it is going in and hopefully it will be something cheap to fix *crosses fingers* Worst case I found a guy online that has the same tranny from his Libby, only has 25K on it and will sell it to me for $300 plus shipping of about 200

While I am not happy about it, it would sure beat a high price tag.

Maybe I will try the swap in my garage...we will see if it comes to that though. If I do need to swap it, who wants to help

Just a thought, you might get underneath and check your front prop shaft - those symptoms are very similar to what happened on mine when it finally gave out. If that happens to be the cause it's a lot cheaper (and faster) to fix than a tranny or t-case

Where would the meeting spot be for this?...I am thinking about staying in the downtown area..just wondering how far of a drive that would be

We just need to decide whether to run it from North to South or Visa Versa. We will either start in Red Rock canyon or a convenient spot to the North of town and then convoy out to the trail head (we will take US 95 north about 20 miles and then turn west for another 12 miles or so). If you stay on the south end of The Strip, Red Rock is closer and if you stay on the north end of The Strip or Downtown the other would be closer. Plan on 30 - 40 minutes drive time to reach the meeting place for a ball park number. My vote would be to start at Red Rock, but then I live about 10 miles from there so I am more than a little biased.

After driving around the area yesterday I would say the Red Rock side as well. Do you know what they charge to get into the park? Do they charge? I just saw a sign by there that said fee station.

Well it is official...my tranny is dead. So...yeah...not sure what I am gonna do now. 5K to replace it, they say there is no internal pressure at all and they are amazed that I was able to drive it to the shop. So...now I have to decide what I am going to do.

Start shopping used ones and have an install party! Seems odd that if there is no internal pressure that it would work at all?! Hope you can get it sorted out in time. If not, Ride along? I won't have an open seat but I am sure others will.

YOU call it! It is Your event, we are just gonna use you all day anyway! :wink:

I am sure it will be a blast no matter what.
