well I was in the process of changing my tranny fluid, so I pull out the old filter, and compare it to the new one, just for fun. It doesn't match! I bought a transmission filter/gasket kit for the 42RLE, gasket is correct, but the filter's neck going into the trans is much shorter, it is thinner, and most importantly, it lacks the two torx screws that hold it in.

IS there a 42RE? I told our local, no name auto store and they said they had a 42RE, I told him it was an 42RLE, but we looked at the gasket and knew it was right, so we said " ahh, it'll work."

Bear in mind this is sunday night, i have to go to school at 630, and have no trans fluid. the local place was not open, so I get a friend to take me about 30 min. to the nearest autozone. Well they can order it and have it in 3 days. let's try advanced auto parts! Yes! they have trans filters! ohh.. wait only for the 45RFE... The guy laughed at me and said good luck. O'Reilly? nope.

so I'm stuck in the old scotsdale til i can get to the jeep stealer...

UHG! :x

Find a filter for a '03-'06 TJ Rubicon, they use the same trans as you have.

Or put the old one back in.

Thats what I told them! and they said it would've shown up in there anyway since it was the same part number.

seriously? would reusing it be smart if i didn't have to? this fluid has about 68K on it. and the round thing in the pan had a lot of sludge in it.

I called my dealership this morning and they have one, but I got a ride to my old chevy scotsdale, so i have transportation at least.

so, be sure that you have the right filter, haha

the other good thing is that now all the fluid will definately be out of it since its been draining for over 24 hours

Be sure to pick up a couple extra quarts of ATF+4. Glad to hear you got the right filter.

ALL the old fluid will not be out of it just because it drained overnight. The torque converter, trans lines and cooler will not empty from a pan drop so make sure you fill it w/ the correct amount of fluid. When I drain mine overnight they take 5-6 qts. but be sure warm it up on the low side and to verify on the dipstick before topping off so you don't overfill it.

DOH! That does suck. I would probably pop in the old filter, do what I could to clean it out then pop it back in. I have not heard of a 45RE...but what do I know?

42RE transmissions came on the 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees (ZJs and WJs).

if you go to aotozone, aap and ask for a filter for an 05 comumbia youll get the right one. Because of the switch in transmissions the retailers never really picked up on it til about 05
