The insides of the D30 are fine (not bulletproof by any means, but will work) for 33's. I went to school with a guy that ran 33's on his wrangler YJ. He never broke an axle when we went wheeling. You just gotta be a little more prudent with the throttle. The big problem with our D30a is the aluminum housing. Aluminum is half the weight of steel but only 1/3 the strength. If you look at the center section of a D30 axle and you look at the D30a, there is no difference in size. This means our front end is 2/3's weaker then the regular D30. The big problem is hard landings on the front axle case. My question is, how hard would it be to cut the center section out a Dana 30 or 44 for that matter and make it into a front diff? Shouldn't be too hard for a regular driveshaft/machine shop to do. Set it up with those new CV's and we got a bulletproof front end for 33's that can run any gear ratio made for the D30. D30's are also dirt cheap cause everyone rips em out of theirs Wranglers.
Well as far the the YJ D30 goes your right that the strength of the center housing is not thought of as a problem and that 33's are considered the largest tire to run (expecially if you still have the even bigger turd rear axle, the D35) but that front end is a turd. Why do you think the YJ people don't want them? Heck, I've got two in my shop that are basicly very big paper weights. Maybe ask over at places like
www.Pirate4x4.com to see what have to say about the durablity of the D30.
But I think you missed the point. Our D30a set-up is just as big of a turd as the example I was tring to use...the D30. Just like a stock or near stock YJ with factory axles, it's fine for street and light wheeling. Both the D30 and D30a are "light duty" units. What happens is as you tackle issues, you can now wheel better/harder and as we tackle the current issues with the D30a, new weak points will have to be tackled. For example on the D30 again...problem: vacume dico fails, fix: locker or Posi-Lok. Then problem: 260x u-joints, fix: 297x, CTMs. Etc, Etc, Etc...it keeps going until you've spent thousads of $ into a axle that will never be a strong as a big spline and big brake axle like a D44, D60, or Ford 9". After hubs, chromo shafts, brake lines, master cylinder and more; you find that you just dumped alot of money into polishing a turd, and it's still a turd and that you wish you would have put that $ into a better starting point (axle). I'm sure most of us here have found by now that wheeling is a bit of an addiction! I'm telling ya, the more you push the KJ; the more your going to what to push it even futher; just like the Wrangler people do.
