235/85/16's?

I found this guys jeep on cardomain he has some type of lift it doesn't say what kind but is running 235/85/16's and they look sweet anyone heard of this?

look in this section about half way down some have done it but make sure you have a good lift and something to cut with the inner fenders with, plus extra $$ for gas since its going to take a lot more. That is unless you are going to 4.10s soon :wink:

looking good comes with a price you know :lol:

I test drove one with those tyres when I was looking for mine.

They look great from the side but from the front they look VERY skinny... cheese cutters.

I roll the 235/85R16.

I prefer a skinner tire over a wider one, it puts more weight on a smaller footprint which sometimes gives the traction you need. If I weren’t towing a camper, I would opt for a 235/80/17.

Skinnier tires like to dig into soft stuff instead of floating on top. Like sand, dirt and mud. At least from my experiences.

Yes, it just depends on what type of terrain that you’re driving on. Generally speaking, I prefer a narrower tire in the Rocky mountain regions (specifically the parts of NM that I wheel in) because there always seems to be rock beneath that 6" of mud, sand, and lose dirt. When we had the LJ Wrangler, I could see where my axels were dragging in the mud but somehow I never got stuck or lost traction because those tires just kept digging until they found traction. Those who significantly had a more wider tire seemed to have more problems keeping their vehicle on the road/trail as they floated more. Our cabin was in the mountains and we had to travel on a few BIA roads to get to work. The BIA roads were not maintained and were pretty muddy during the monsoon season and during snow melt.

FYI - JeepinMaxx also has the 235/85/R16 (32") Maxxis BigHorns, he still has the factory 3.73 gears.

Wow your KJ looks like a freakin beast I love it! Will it be any different for me with only a Frankenlift I and BFG All Terrain T/A KO's in 235/85R16?

Thanks! Without researching, I think the Frankenlift I gives 2.5 inches on the gasser. The Frakenlift II (which is what I have) give 2.25 inches on the CRD (Diesel) model which is what I have. I just did get 2.25 inches but from others on L.O.S.T., I am one of the few that DIDN'T gain more than the advertised hight. My point? I think you should be fine and probably even better off than I am. You should get bare minimum of 2.5 inches (and will probably get a bit more) so you will already be taller than me.

I *think* I notice a slight power loss but I baby it, especially now with the new tires. With my KJ being a diesel, I don't know that my power differences will really help you answer this question.

I really have not done an honest mpg test yet but with some rough checks looks like I am several mpg down from where I was pre lift and tires. My wife has a Mazda3 that we drive on trips and such when we don't need the Jeep so I wasn't letting mpg hold me back from making my KJ what I wanted it to be!

The Frankenlift II Premium for the gasoline engine will give you a solid 3” inches of lift, especially if you add two rear isolators in the rear. Once you add front and rear bumpers with a winch, then you will settle down a little, maybe down to 2.75” of lift.

I have a gasser and a franky and have 4" of lift after settling. I had to add 2 rear spring isolators to bring the rear level to the front but the front is at 4" above stock and I have not added anything extra to it. I have a steel front bumper too.

you will notice some power loss and MPG loss for sure going to a larger diameter tire, ( esp. when getting close to a 32 inch) anyone who says different is only kidding their self, done too many over the years and any make/model/engine/tranny will

Been looking at the specs between the 265/75/16 and 235/85/16. The diameter seems about the same, with the 235 being a bit narrower. I drive mainly in the snow. If I went the way of the 235 what are the pros/cons? anybody have experience with this change?

I personally like the narrow tire width for several reasons. First, as noted above, you’ll have more weight on a smaller footprint (pounds per square inch). For example: If you look at the tires that most 4x4’s run in the African desert and the Sahara, they are narrow tires because they dig down and give traction in deep loose sand. Also, there is less hydroplaning on a narrow tire because the escape path is relatively short. Just think back to the original Willys with a contact patch of 5.5 inches wide. :shock:

Within the context of what “most” of our Jeep Liberty’s will be doing, and from what I have read in the off-road world, generally speaking, most narrow tires exhibit performance advantages over wider tires. As one guy said it, “wide tires are for dragsters.”

Of course we have to define what wide is and we have to look at the tire width vs. the rim width. And finally, tire selection is just as equally important when deciding which tire is best for the application.

In your case, I would run the 235 because you mainly drive in the snow. Wide tires tend to ride on top of the snow, whereas narrow tires are more likely to dig down through the snow. :wink:

I have wheeled in UT when I lived there and here in FL. On road I think there is little difference except that I think in high traction situations the less rolling resistance of the 235/85R16 is easier on the front diff.
These tires were excellent for rock crawling but are a at a huge disadvantage here where the only thing under the mud is more mud.

235/85/16's?
