handheld cb

I'm looking at some handheld CBs, one's that are self-contained and don't have the box.

Are there any others that are recommended? I need to make a decision in the next day or so, so please post up with suggestions and reviews. I'm looking for something that won't run me more than $150 or so.

If you want an all-in-one, then the Cobra 75W is awesome. It is not portable like the hand-held you are talking about, but there is no so called "box" to it. Everything is in the "mike."

How does it install? Any pictures?

If you need a handheld version I would recommend the Midland 75. It is a handheld but the battery can be removed and replaced with a car kit so that it functions just like a Cobra 75. From what I understand they are comparable in quality to the Cobra also.

The Cobra has a small junction box (about 4"x2"x2") that is basically the brain of the CB. It mounts behind the dash, or under the seat usually. All controls are in the mic.

I personally run the Cobra 75 in Both Jeeps and the wife's FX4, I love it.

I was thinking of the handheld only because I am completely inept at wiring things. They either don't work when I'm done with it, or it doesn't have a very professional look when I'm done. I do really like the look of that Cobra one though!

I vote Cobra 75 WX/ST as well. It has your 40 Channels, weather, and it's all in one easy to handle device!

Super easy, just 2 wires. Power and Ground. I have mine mounted with 2 zip ties to to the underside of the drivers seat. Ran the Power under the carpet to the fuse panel where it's taped into an always on fuse. The Ground was grounded to the body at the seat mounts. hung the Mic on the dash... project done.

Agree. I have the Midland and I like it a lot. Very compact, and the ability to use batteries or the car kit is really slick. It comes with 3 attachments:

1. car kit: runs to ext. antenna cable and 12v jack
2. AA battery pack.
3. rechargeable AA pack. this is for rechargeable AAs and has an AC adapter to charge

I always have it hooked up to the car kit, but I carry the AA pack and the little antenna that hooks onto the top with me in the jeep so if i need to use it handheld out and about i have that ability. we've had situations on the trail when someone needed to walk ahead to scout the trail and avoid having to run all the way back in reverse since there was no where to turn around. the handheld ability is useful in this kind of situation. really versatile.

I just ordered the Midland one, and part of the reason why is as you pointed out - scouting ability on foot.
