What's the difference between a Roller Fairlead, and a Hawse Fairlead?
Advantages/Dis to each?
Pic of each?

Reason I ask, is because on 4WheelParts.com, the only thing separating two same winches is the weight b/c of the wire rope length, and the fairlead...

Roller fairlead is better for cable,Hawse fairlead is better for sythetic rope.Winchdepot has the WARN M8000 for cheaper, last I'd seen(a few days ago) it was $512+$10 S/H.

Go to winch depot and get this WARN M8000----http://www.winchdepot.com/PDT57613.aspx

Then go here to get the sythetic line and hawse fairlead----http://www.armorology.com/Product%20Info.htm-(scroll to bottom)

Jed at Armorology is a good guy, knows his stuff.

Whats the reason behind synthetic being better than cable? is it for safety purposes if the cable snap? Ive seen synthetic line snap. Which made me think cable is better for strength & durability.

synthetic is far easier to work with, its lighter and stronger / pound.

Since the synthetic is lighter than steel cable, if it snaps under tension there's less mass within the cable which equals less kinetic energy - You run the risk of having a steel cable come flying back at you if it snaps, synthetic will snap and fall to the ground.

Also, if a steel cable breaks on the trail you're kinda screwed unless you have special tools/clamps. If a synthetic cable breaks on the trail you can use a bowline knot as a temporary fix to finish the day.

The M8000 is a great winch for the KJ. It fits nicely on the ARB, and it got me out of a pretty deep ooops with ease. and the remote reaches to the driver or passenger side windows for self winching. The only thing i want to change is the cable and go with synthetic. O and i got one of the license plate holders that clip onto the fairlead and it flips up when i need to use the winch.

The M8000 is a great winch. They are quite a bit better than the knockoff 8,9, and 12k winches that are flooding the market now.

Changing the wire rope for synthetic is a great idea. It saves 30 or so pounds and it is much easier to use when running up a sand hill to hook to a YJ that was sliding off a cliff. You can also use it as a jumprope if you have kids. Using a steel line for jumprope is bad parenting (so my wife says).

I had a synthetic line break and hit me once and it was so much nicer than getting cut in two by steel.

I went with the 3/8” X 80’ line that is rated at 19,600 lbs. I tried getting the orange color, but the wife said “NO.” I never get the fun colors................. She said, "We don't have a fun colored Jeep." So we agreed on the Charcoal color. I went with the crush-proof thimble in black and the smaller yellow 8 M TON safety hook. The safety hook is the only fun color on the Jeep. 8) I decided not to get the 10’ Red Heat Shield, but maybe I should have????? It's only 16 dollars more.......
I'll never use my winch enough to really need one, but the extra 10' feet might come in handy.

Well I'll throw this in an open a

Image.

I want to run a MileMarker hydraulic winch.I'm aware the engine needs to be running and this is the only drawback I see.Anyone have any experience with them?

I have no experience with them, but they basically run off your power steering pump correct? I wouldn't say we have the strongest p/s pump

"The electric winch does not require the engine to be running to work, which is it's biggest advantage. The big argument against the electric winch in the past was it would drain you battery and there was no way your alternator could provide sufficient power for a long pull. The automotive industry has made great improvements in alternator and battery technology over the past years which has given the advantage to the electric winch. Batteries have more power and alternators have higher outputs. An electric winch might even work if your truck is upsidedown or under water.

Some of the advantages of the hydraulic winch are pulling power, pull duration, and weight. The hydraulic winch runs off your existing power steering pump. There is no need to upgrade alternator of battery for the winch, but you may consider upgrading your power steering pump. If you don't have power steering, convert now, regardless of what winch you get. A hydraulic winch should be able to pull harder and longer than a electric winch with out over heating. Hydraulic winches are also much lighter than electric winches, putting less strain on your front axle and front springs.

Hydraulic winches suffer from the same disadvantage as the PTO winch, neither works when the engine isn't running. The hydraulic winches I've seen have a real slow line speed, this could an advantage under some circumstances, but generally this is a disadvantage. There is a two speed model, but the high speed is not for use under load. Another disadvantage I've heard from people with hydraulic winches is the reduced ability to steer and winch at the same time."

First thing is If you are getting a new winch, Say the M8000 from WinchDepot.com (that's what I did) get the one with the roller fairlead. Then imediately switch out the line for synthetic. USE THE ROLLER FAIRLEAD for the synthetic line. Since it is new and no dings or cuts on the rollers, it is ALWAYS BEST to use a roller fairlead.

The rollers offer less resistance and always work better, IF THEY ARE NEW.

Get yourself a good deal on synthetic line. Syn is better for several reasons.
http://www.amsteelblue.com/item.cfm?itemid=44772

1. weight, duh!
2. It wont store energy, so if or when it snaps, it wont take a leg or your head off as the line snapps back.
3. It floats. BIG plus if you are in a big mud puddle.
4. with a little practice VERY easy to splice a repair in the field. (http://www.stu-offroad.com/recovery/trailfix/trailfix-1.htm)

I took off my steel line (STILL 4 sale btw) and spooled on 80 feet of syn. then got 45 feet of a "Jumper" to use if I needed the extra reach.

I got my line from a guy that has GREAT prices, and custom makes the lines to order. Tommudd know who he is i think. I will look for the link.
