After the newness wears off VW will be building more lower priced TDI's, they always do

Where Mahindra is aiming is the little three's market share of small trucks that is seriously lacking. The Dakota, Ranger and whatever they call the S-10 now :?

My neibhor has a S-10 with a 4 cyliner and a Caddy with a North Star. Guess which one getts better highway mileage and by how much  Caddy wins hands down by 10 or more MPG over the enemic 4 cylinder

I'll be glad when the newness wears off. How long will that take?

I remember learning to drive a 5-speed on a Rabbit diesel back in the 80's, so after 20+ years of importing diesels, it's about time for the new to wear off and for them to bring in some affordable little commuter cars.

The way the economy is heading, we’ll be lucky to see very many new diesels. I called a VW dealership today and asked about TDI options. The VW guy told me that VW is making some “structural” changes and looking to cut back on production. I guess they are now offering white and silver as the only paint options? I’m not sure how true all this is, but the guy didn’t act like he was trying to play me. He even encouraged me to look at the “BIGGER” dealerships to see if they have any other paint options.

European Automobile Production Grows by 5.3% in 2007; Diesel Accounts for 53.3% of New Car Registrations With little cars using diesel fuel getting upwards of 90mpg. VW stated they will have one giving 191mpg soon. Do a search on Google for: "European Diesel Cars". Very interesting!

Here is something I was thinking about. Drive 2 cars for say 1,000 miles. Car #1 gets 22mpg. Car #2 gets 90mpg. Over that 1,000 miles which one produces the highest amount of pollution in total?

What got me thinking about that is the EPA and whoever else won't let those 90mpg diesels in our country because they don't meet our pollution standards.

That is something that most diesel owners have known for a long time. Same goes for EV owners. Somehow all those fantastic cars sold in Europe but made by American companies often in American factories just cant seem to meet EPA requirements or DOT requirements for bumpers. Somehow all those fantastic electric vehicles that GM has designed and shown as functional models at auto shows just never seem to make it to the public market. Think about the Chevrolet E-10 and Ford Ranger electric trucks both of which were capable of nearly 100 mile ranges. When their lease contracts were up they did not just refuse to renew the leases but most of the trucks were crushed. Toyota sold or leased 328 plugin Rav4s which achieved up to 120 miles per charge as an "experiment" to appease the state of California. They were wildly successful and the lessees did not want to give them up when the terms were up but do you think that they made any more even though they had requests for thousands more? Nope they came up with some bull crap about no longer being able to manufacture the batteries for them. These technologies are now 10 years old, so where are all the groovy cars that Americans want? I don't usually go in for Geordi's conspiracy theories but the facts are self evident on this one. The Federal Government and auto industry are in bed together and BP/Amoco is their personal lubricant of choice. Mahindra has agreed to play their game and is tooling up to meet all of the ridiculous restrictions in order to crack their way into the market on the gamble that the Fed won't shut them down before America figures out how they have been getting screwed all these years with Detroit crap.

My ten pennies worth as a non USA citizen, i tend to agree with you.

Our local motor industry was also protected by charging huge import duties on oversees manufactured vehicles to protect the supply and demand for local vehicles.

Times have changed however and thank goodness for that because now we have such a wide variety of vehicles to chose from that it actually becomes difficult to decide on what to buy. Yes this did put pressure on the local SA manufacturers which created opportunities for them though to explore the export markets. It only toughened them up and got them ready to operate within a highly competitive market.

As a fairly new comer to this forum and i've said this before, i cannot believe how limited you fellows are with the choice of vehicles that you have in the US. Something is wrong and it's not for me to guage where the problems are and yes obviously employment security and a support local brands initiative does play its part but looking at the current crisis in the US
and threats of manufacturers laying off employees is not nice.

Anyway my opinion is not going to change anything but perhaps venting your frustrations using whatever means you have may start opening the eyes of the policy makers.

I sometimes do think that these comments made on these forums are somehow intercepted by influential decision makers be it the engineers of DC etc and if only a small percent of what we say is put to the good, then we all benefit from the progress in the vehicles we choose to buy.

I'm becoming to emotional now to continue so i guess it's time for a Jack

As much as the framers of our Constitution intended to have a functional Government free from corruption, there are those who have other agendas. When the EPA was started, they served a purpose and the pollution problems have greatly diminished. For various individuals to justify their existence and publish papers and grab onto grant money, they are going to extremes that defy reality and the laws of physics. Evacuating a school bus and cleaning it out as if it contained a deadly substance because someone found a peanut (peanut allergy paranoia) on the bus floor, is asinine. There are people who will not stop on ratcheting up automotive emissions even after asthma suffers use the exhaust pipe as a rescue inhaler. It is time to expose corrupt politicians, lobbyists, journalists, and corporate executives and put them in prison with the other hardened criminals. Then we will all have more freedom to chose what we want to do with our lives and take on the responsibility of freedom. This includes the freedom to pick the vehicle we want to own and drive :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

Another prime example is what's going on now with the govenor in your home state  My dad said many years ago that we should throw them all out and start over  I thought that was a radical idea at the time and asked him why. He was right then and to the day he died
