I believe the 3.7 is made to run on 87 octane gas but if towing or with a large payload you should use 89. Maybe that was the problem. Maybe the altitude, payload and off road mods added up to be almost too much for your jeep to take.

if you have the hd cooling you need to persuade the hard lines that pass right under the pcv valve a little to get it all the way off, and then to get the new one on.
Counter clockwise 1/4 turn then straight out if i remember right

The bigger tires do make a big difference.
Going up to Big Bear through the Lucerne Valley, you are in a tight twisty road. You have to drive slow and the Jeep pretty much stays in 2nd gear. When you try to tackle a long hill, at altitude, you'll notice the difference.
When I first got my Jeep, I drove to Vegas and had no problem making it up that steep climb on the 15 freeway. After getting the bigger tires, I noticed a big difference in power. I really had to gun it to keep a constant speed. It's even worse when going through the mountains on my way to Moab. I'm constantly getting passed by Civics and Kias while trying to negotiate some of the long hill climbs.
(edit: no disrespect to any Civic or Kia owners  )

Sometimes a pair of pliers can help you twist the PCV valve to get it out and then replace it.

Jeep was probably working hard because of the weight and low octane at the higher elevations.

I think you got a spark infestation in your motor.

I'd put my money on fuel pump or fuel filter problems. Your situation sounds pretty severe for just octane or tire issues.
What RPMs were your reading at the time?

Really cant remember the RPMS. If it was a fuel problem I think i would feel it more on a daily commute to work and back and everything is just as normal as when I first bought the car. ANd I have had a car that needed a new fuel pump so I know what thats like.

Your daily grind most likely does not require the amount of fuel as when it's fully loaded, at very high altitude going up steep grade. I would start with the fuel filter expecially if you've not replaced it recently :D And a Sea Foam in the tank is a good idea also to clean your fuel system

I will be going to bear the next couple of weekends with less people in my car so I will see how it does then and go from there with the fuel filter. Whenever I had a car with a fuel pump going out it would sputter and i did not feel that when I was driving.

It wouldn't hurt to run a few bottles of injector cleaner through it. You will have to let us know how the trip to Big Bear goes.

Tell me about it! It took me 3 hours to get from Blue Diamond and Pebble to Green Valley and back! Its a friggin 30 mile round trip! A lot of people are terrified of driving in the rain, let alone the snow. I guess since they closed the airport it was pretty bad for Vegas. I got nearly 4 inches at my place. I don't remember the last time it snowed twice in one winter here.

Sorry. I know this is Image

On my '94 Wrangler, the exact same thing happened..
turned out to be a clogged Catalytic Converter..
With only 22,000 miles on it at the time, I have no idea how that happened..
It was covered under warranty..

Otherwise it will be a clogged fuel filter.. Have you tried that yet.?

If you don’t mind pouring some money into your Jeep, then regardless what the problem is, I would highly suggest regearing to 4:10’s. By adding taller tires, you have greatly decreased the overall performance of your Jeep.

Just got back from big bear and it did well. This time it was only my girlfriend and I. I also got pretty good MPG considering I used full time 4wd for 1/4 of the tank I was still able to throw down 15.5 mpg overall. I really think it was just the extra weight that I had in the car at that time plus the grade of the hill.

I wanted to look into regearing but I want to know how much it would cost me and what time of gains will I get back. MPG? Power? Price? Easy to install not easy etc.
