Funny how I've heard two stories about how they came up with JEEP.

1st) The one about Eugene ofcourse, he's a friend of Popeye. Because he's practically indestructible the GI's nicknamed the Willy: JEEP.

2nd) The Army named the Willy 'GP' short for 'general purpose' if you say it quickly you get 'jeepy'...later becoming JEEP.

Which is true?

The credit manager at the company I work for now who is Romanian, says the Jeep was invented in Romania.

Are you talking about Eugene or the vehicle?

because....I have a friend from outer space that says it created Jeep on the planet Jeepstar in another galaxy far far away.

Back in the day of yore Olive Oyle's uncle made a trip to Africa. While there he found and captured an amazing creature that only emitted 1 sound. That sound was "Jeep". He presented this wonderful animal to Olive and her "boyfriend" Popeye where upon the name Eugene was given to it. Now this is, as EVERYONE knows, the true story of Eugene the Jeep.

Eugene was fairly popular before WWII - and went the Army was testing the 1/4 ton 4x4 Willys - one of the test drivers said hey this thing can go anywhere - it's a Jeep. The name stuck.
