I was wondering if anyone has the Rocky Road Rock Rails, and what you think of them, the mounting arms seem a little small but I asked RRO about it and they said it was .188 which is ~3/16".

and could you post some pics of them, like the mounting?

thanks

I've got a set. had them on my KJ for about 2 1/2 years now. They are not bad. When I bought them, I didn't know about AllJ's boulder bars or RockLizards bars. Rocky Road had them already built so I was able to get them installed within a couple of weeks of ordering them.

Mine have held up very well through a lot of abuse. I've come down hard on them with full weight both sides. Couldn't bend the rails themselves, but did bend the smaller tubes that connect to the unibody frame slightly. No welds have broke or cracked. I think they are well made and good quality.

That being said, If I replace them, I'd probably go with RockLizard's bars. They are much beefier and will take more abuse, but more expensive.

These are his step rails.I don't think he offers them anymore. They've been through hell and come back for more.I use them to lift the Jeep with my Hi-Lift.

Oh and it hasn't been this clean since I took this picture.

It's raining here for the next day or two.I'll try and remember when it dries out.Yeah if you look closely at that pic the front of the rail is a little closer to the body than the rear.It took a slide off a rock of about 3 feet onto the rail to do it.They're pretty tough.

Most rock rails on the market will hold up just fine to even heavy use. It is the unibody where they mount that you have to watch. My pinch weld is bent at my forward portion of the rail due to the outer frame area that they bolt to bending/defecting. I have seen a couple different KJ's that have some deformation in the same area. Eventually I will be plating the full length of the outer and bottom portion of the frame rails to eleviate this problem as well as to reduce flex in those areas too. This is a similar problem to what you will see on XJ's and ZJ's due to the unibody construction.

Another way to keep this from happening would be to enlarge the mounting plate where it meets the frame so that the load is spread out over a larger area.

pics for better explanation:

BTW, it took a pretty hard hit for this to happen but it has gotten worse over time since some other hard hits in the same spot. Stupid mall wheelin' is starting to take its toll!

I have the RRO super sliders and they are heavy duty real good quality. The Super sliders are built the same they just have the extra bar that serves as a step. I had an issue at first they sent me the wrong set so I had to wait 2 more weeks but they corrected the problem and threw in a spare tire relocator for my trouble. I will try and post some pics of them tonight. I would definatly reccomend them very good quality and they look sweet to. Hope this helps.

I'll have more to say on this after Monday. I ordered the super sliders just over 2 weeks ago and UPS tracking shows they should be here after the weekend.

you wont have to do anything with them . wait till you get them feel the weight :D if you are going to do the job on your own you will need a jack to hold them in place. Watch the template they send you mine was not exact. I jacked up the rails and and marked the holes for drilling without the templates. Post pictures when your done..good luck

yeah easy install. but they are heavy. you will need a good bit to drill thru the unibody. get a can of spray to repaint the drilled areas before installing. go slide down something!

The super sliders were waiting for me when I got home from work. Jeez, the whole package weighed 88 lbs, being old and tired i drug them into the garage, I'll unwrap them later and think about installing them when it gets above freezing, 14 deg. right now.

Looks like there on sale too!
http://www.rocky-road.com/kjrockslider.html

I'm gonna have to try to get the wife to order a pair when I get home. I think these would be a very nice upgrade compared to my current mopar rails that are bent to heck, there smaller too so I won't look so low to the ground :S
