My 1979 AMC Grand Wagoneer was a Grand Wagoneer, had the badges on the side,oh and It was 4wd,actually full time 4wd(QuadraTrac).It was Maroon with wood grain sides,360 V-8(blew up and replaced with IH304),Turbo 400 trans,D44 F/R.

Troy I think your Wagoneer was rebadged. In 79 they only produced the 2 door Cherokee, and the 4 door Wagoneer Limited. The first Grand Wagoneer wasn't until 84.

Well, people do not know wth they are talking about. Just like everyone with a CJ8 thinks they have a Scrambler.

Remember that a lot of people add many tags words to get hits.

Besides being into FSJ's for decades, I actually consulted my 1979 Jeep Owners manual. I may not have my '05 KJ's owner's manual, but I do have one for the 1979 model year. There are many FSJ websites to check if you really give a crap, I don't know if it is worth much more effort than this.

I think there are just mostly confused people. I even double checked my NADA Guide. in 79 no Grand, showed up in 84.

I do not like to marginalize people into subgroups, but if I were to analyze why I believe KK owners may be “different,” I would say that many new Jeep owners (just like the KJ owners) have different expectations for what a Jeep is suppose to be. Those who have turned to the Liberty, Patriot, and Compass aren’t looking for a hardcore off-road Jeep. The whole concept of “JEEP” has changed. Besides the Wrangler, everything else has gone more mainstream because there aren’t a lot of young people who want the ruggedness of a real Jeep. And honestly, who can blame them? Even though I think the KJ has contributed to the off-road world and hasn’t been a total embarrassment to the traditional Jeep brand, it’s one step towards mainstream. Also, consider kids today. I’m a school teacher and I have noticed a big difference in kids today. Do you realize how many young men we have out there who have never changed their own oil, much less check their own oil? As education places technology at the center of educational practices, it has slowly changed how we teach in our schools. America is teaching young men and women that technology is the way of the future, therefore knowing 21st century skills is more important than learning vocation or trade skills. I’m 33 years old, and I feel very “lost” within my own generation because most males my age are into video games, watching sports on T.V., playing golf, and living the city life. I have a difficult time finding people my age who enjoy camping, hunting, gardening, or turning a wrench. Just from my educational experiences as a teacher, I see a very different future for our young men and women. In high school, most students would take a sports car over a Wrangler. Anyway, that’s my opinion, but something to consider as I see society changing.

I have to agree with you. My two sons are so completely different that I sometimes wonder if they are brothers. My older son has no desire to "get his hands dirty". He called me the other day and said his econobox needed its 50k mile service and the dealership wanted over $700 to do it. I told him to email me a list of what was going to be done and I told him that he could do it all himself (he's out of warranty anyway) for about $300 and a weekend of work. I told him that he has to consider that the dealer has to pay the techs wages as well as overhead for the building and stuff so the labor quote was not outragous. I spent an hour talking to him about it and when it was all said and done he said, "I told my girlfriend I would go shopping with her and it's cold outside, and I might not have all the tools I need so I am just going to pony up and have the dealership do it". This kid spent time under every vehicle that I ever owned when he was growing up and he never showed any interest in anything mechanical. My younger son thinks its great fun to get dirty with me and really has a good head for understanding cause and effect in a mechanical setting. Even so, with the exception of doing routine maintenance, he would rather pay to have work done. Could it be because automobiles are so much more "electronic" (for lack of a better description) than they used to be? I used to think my '61 VW Baja Bug was complicated

dieselenthusiast, something to think about: polite society isn't the only teacher. In fact, it's more like a special interest group. To me, "mainstream" is a boring river somewhere with bad fishing.

Look back a thousand years and see how much more people have learned from natural disasters, adapting to extreme climates, disease epidemics, wars and the like. That's the kind of educational opportunity that'll wake up those who are overly focused on comfort, entertainment, etc. Or they'll die. We're all animals when it gets right down to it, we've just been living in the barn too long.

I agree. My educational philosophy is Progressivism. Progressivism is closely related to the traditional educational philosophy of pragmatism. In educational psychology, constructivism is the bases for progressivism and it’s purpose is to help students use concrete experiences and real-world tasks to determine reality and propel self-actualization and higher learning. In educational psychology, progressivism is an educational philosophy that emphasizes curriculum that focuses on solving real-world problems and building individual development through experiences and prior knowledge. Progressivism is a philosophy that uses problem solving skills and decision making skills to help students succeed in the 21 century. In progressivism, the educator guides learning with questions. Learning strategies are implemented and constructed to develop and guide practical problem-solving activities through problem-based learning, cooperative learning, and guided discovery. The emphasis is to establish a cooperative, collaborative, self-regulated, and democratic learning environment. Rather than focusing on standards and state testing, progressivism uses assessments that include continuous feedback and informal monitoring of student progress. However, our American education system does not use progressivism as it's framework, instead we embrace socialism and false hope.

There were no Grand Wagoneers in '79: That did not start until jeep made a "baby" XJ Wagoneer in '85, making the need for the "Grand" term when referring to the real version. Also, I am confused over the "no 4wd." All '79 Wagoneers were 4wd?

My KJ:
No ABS or other electronic nannies
No Leather
No slushbox
the NSG370 IS used in the Ram, but is hardly the tranny my T18 is...
No power seats
And if I read on more " oh my gosh my tires make noise on the road' thread I may scream at my monitor.

To each is own on trannies: I want the control, options, and reliability of a manual when playing. No auto KJ or KK is going to touch the crawl ratio ( and control that comes with it) of a good stick. Yes, it may take a bit more concentration, but if I wanted a sunday drive I'd be on the interstate.

There really must be a "gap" of some sort going on, but I do not know if it is age. I have been trashed in the past for talking about the "jeep brotherhood" back when driving a jeep meant you were in something unique & were probably sacrificing something to be in it. I could not comprehend complaining about a squeek in my CJ2a, C101, C104, CJ5, '79 Chero or even the new one, the '80. I view the Kj as a jeep, and treat it no differently. I realize I am in a jeep and to have the abiltiy a CR-V lacks, I am giving up somethings elsewhere. Jeep's sales success with watered down vehicles, starting with the XJ, has meant a growing stream of people more concerned with widgets, amps, and fake fender vents than jeeps.

First...my dad just scrapped his '84 XJ Wagoneer a few months ago (Worth more to the yard than it was to sell). Just to clarify that:)

I think a lot of we "real" (I hate to SAY that, but...) Jeepers are a little more annoyed at this sort of thing than the people whose KJ or KK is their FIRST Jeep. My KJ is not my first Jeep/4x4...and it's easily the NICEST driving, least-beat-you-up-every-single-day 4x4 I've owned. The build quality is very impressive, at 120,000 miles the only real noise I can complain about is the junk rolling around in my cargo area.

But anyway...

As far as the "That's what XJ owners say about KJers"...SirSam, put some real tires on your overgrown, SFA K-car lookin, no-headroom-havin box-it-came-in mall crawler before you smack talk anything that goes off road or somebody's ride quality complaint.
'nuff said.

PS- said '84 Wagoneer was a Limited with leather, i think heated mirrors, electric 4wd engagement...need I say more?

That really didn't make any sense at all.

Last time I checked, the KJ did not look like a K-car wagon.

XJ:

KJ looks nothing like either (but I'd take an 86-87 Chrysler Town&Country wagon with the turbo 2.2 over an XJ any day...)

I own (well my son at college claims it) an XJ and a CRD KJ. Love them both. I am more willing to bash the XJ but the KJ has similar off road potential. It just saved my booty on an AZ back road I took by mistake, down a steep hill and stream crossing. Glad I had good AT/KO tires. Have them on the XJ too, good around Death Valley. I use the KJ differently as I to a small trailer with it and it is shinny and new and I have the XJ to bash. My older son has a Grand Cherokee, works well for his family and getting through snow. These are all really good vehicles. I suspect the KK will prove to be good too. Onw would probably work for me at the right price.

Ok.... here we go

This has gone from a rant.... to a rave.... to a jeep version of "The View" I'm not complaining this has been an amusing 15 min of my time.

-Next I would like to add a different spin to this as well
I'm fairly young and I plan on putting in a new radio deck into my KJ so I can utilize my Ipod and better use the speakers I also already have a sub and amp from my old truck I'll throw in as well.
I also plan on putting in a Frankenlift, eventually a custom front bumper capable of deflecting a deer (something similar to a modified ARB with a full front grille guard)
I off road a bit not any "jeep" trails, but some "roads" I drive on are rougher than some jeep trails anyway, especially when there's some snow on the ground. Mostly I do this off-roading just trying to get somewhere to hunt.
My jeep has power windows, cruise control, and the remote entry and by god i love it. This is my first vehicle to have power anything, and I don't see one thing wrong with it regardless of the vehicles use.

Next topic, I'm a computer Technician, and currently in college to get my degree and certifications in computer networking and security. This is a nerd job field right.... now I also play video games, build my own computers (I'd hope so considering my job.) I'm ex- air force, medically discharged, and I've spend my fair amount of days pounding out concrete foundations with a sledge hammer.

Where am i going with all this? Almost there just hang in.

I am young play games, don't mind the frilly parts of a vehicle. I get my oil changed at the dealer right now (that was free, part of the compensations for their screw ups). I also go off road, and work on my jeep myself, I've never done a lift myself (yet) but I've done about everything else, mostly on FORD pickups. My point (I know... finally.... right?)

There is a middle to the points everyone else has made thus far. The Jeep KJ is not a cut and dry off road / or city slicker vehicle. It's a versatile vehicles, that's the point, just look at the jeep commercials. As far as on road ride, I don't care about how it handles a pot hole, i care about the fact that it stays on the road after hit that pot hole on a slick road while going around a corner. If it's got an easier ride (every pickup i've ever had was smoother riding than this) then oh well.?

People, especially where i live, like the KJ because their reliable, they are 4x4, and get better gas mileage than most other 4x4 vehicles. In my opinion is the best mix of transport and off road truck there is. When you have to get to work everyday, sometimes that means 40 miles of clear highway at 90 degree weather. Other days it means 2 feet of snow while trying to find a snow plow. This means that I do 21st century work in a 21st century vehicle, but i can change my own oil, brakes, alternator, starter, tires (yea that one gets me too?), ect. ect. ect. There we go, just brought this thread back into the "rave" mode :) my job is done.
