I went out to start my lib today and it fired right up, ran for about 5 seconds and died, started again, ran for 5 seconds, died. did it about 2 more times then finally.. the starter wont even engage. lights work, gauges, radio.. etc. when it started it sounded fine till it died. i was told it could be a security lock out? btw it has 20,000 miles, fresh 5w-30, no leaks or anything im aware of and it was parked in my barn at about 10* - 20*f any ideas guys? also its 3:30 am and terribly cold out so i havent gone out to try it again.. ill try it first thing in the morning

Maybe he meant the transponder in the Jeep needs to be reprogrammed to recognize the key, but that sounds strange.
I would still check the battery. My Optima recently died. It would provide enough juice to start the Jeep, but not enough to power the computer. The end result was that the Jeep would start, then the engine would die, unless I kept my foot on the gas. After putting in a new battery, all is well.

deffiently check the battery 1st mine had a really low charge 360 CCA out of 600 but would still have 12.4 volts so lights and radio worked fine. Starter wouldnt even make a noise I would turn the key and nothing. I think it has to do with how cold it is and how it drains the energy so to speak when the battery is so cold. There isnt enough Cold Crank Amps to turn the motor over.

Yeah, the computers in the vehicle these days have specific requirements for power so they won't continue to run if the battery is not right. It's not like the old days when you could keep it running even with a bad battery as long as the alternator was still kicking juice into it.

Five seconds does sound like the transponder, according to Jeep literature.

Change the battery in the keyfob maybe? :-)

The transponder chip is in the key itself, not the keyfob.

Mine is the keyfob variety, '05 :-) It looks like his is the '05+ version as well, from the lights.

That's a 4.0 I-6 problem, and 99% of the time it's the crankshaft position sensor and not the cam sensor,a real fun job also(2 min to get out and 2 hors to put back in  ).

Any news from the dealership yet?

The Red light on the instrument cluster indicates that you do have the sentry system which requires a key that is programed to your vehicle. If the vehicle antenna doesn't pick up the key fob / key frequency the engine will shut off after 5 seconds.

Then again, batteries are always a good source of these kinds of issues.

So I'm interested to hear what the cause is.

well, i was getting ready to have a friend tow me to the dealership in town, so i pushed it out of my barn, and as soon as i got about 30-40' away.. the light went off  then it fired right up. the only think i can think of is we put a new set of motion lights on the barn that have a remote control at the house, and when the problem started with the lib, one of the lights was stuck on most of the night. maybe there was some sort of interference?

Very interesting little experiment you accidentally did there. Good information to have. I wonder if other types of motion sensors could have the same effect.
