275/70R16???

Looking for a set of winter tires (for next winter). They would most likely be mounted on my stock 16x7 wheels, might paint them black, but that's another story.

Was looking at the Bridgestone Blizzaks in 275/70 would the be too wide for the KJ on 7" wide rim. I'm thinking yes, but wanted everyone else's opinion.

Specs: Bridgestone Blizzaks DM-Z3

Max tire Pressure: 44 psi
Tread depth: 15/32"
Rim width Range: 7-9"
Measuring Rim width: 8"
Section width: 11"
Tread width: 8.7"
Overall diameter: 31.2"

you can run a 275-70 on a 7 to 8.5 inch rim but with the stock wheels it is going to rub like a **** on the sway bar etc. due to the extra width of the tire

Yep, probably going to rub. Most 265's still kiss the sway bar at full lock.

So that leads to the next question, what is the maximum width that you can run on a stock rim without rubbing on the sway bar?

265 is really pushing it on width. Alot depends on the rim, back spacing and width.

What made you pick those particular Blizzaks? I am getting a set of those for my wife's minivan.

On her van, the 4.0 & "sport" suspension gets you Turenza el-400 tires. They suck big time in snow & ice. Checking into them & looking at the gradings show that it is a decidely warm weather tire. As tirerack only offers 3 tires in the 225/65/17 size I need & I had decided on these Blizzaks over the Dunlops or Pirrellis. They are roughly 1/2 the price of Nokian WR's locally. I like the Nokians but the group with the rights to sell Nokians around here really jacks up the price.

I don't have any personal experience with snow tires... I prefer to run an AT or MT that is good year round, but I have read excellent reviews of the General Grabber HTS. It's a bit cheaper than the Blizzaks and it comes in more KJ friendly sizes. Great reviews on TireRack.com also, of 30 reviews all were high 8's or above except for 3 users (8.7, 7.9, and 5.2).

Only "picked" those based on the surveys and user reviews on Tire Rack. We get really bad winters here, so I want a dedicated winter tire. Planning on getting a set of all-terrain tires.

If I see one more person recommend a General tire, I am going to throw up. Of course a magazine is going to say "OH THEY'RE FANTASTIC!"...General is a paying advertiser. When was the last time a magazine review said "Wow, this product completely sucks and has no redeeming qualities whatsoever!"? Probably never.

Reviews on tire rack and in Consumer Reports are best taken with a grain of salt, because 99% of them are replacing garbage disposable OEM tires with something they bought because it was cheap and got good reviews from other people who replaced craptastic OEM tires with said tires.

InCommando, when you gonna come down to get those Blizzaks from me:D

and a 275/70-16? Eek...I, personally, would not go that size. Imagine the trouble (and expense) of matching it up should something happen. If you're going Blizzaks, go with a 245/75-16...that's my advice.

They have 255/65-16 and 255/70-16

Well, just to follow up:

I had only 3 choices in the factory 225/65/17's for a true winter tire for the minivan and I went with the Blizzak's mentioned above.

I had them put on 12/22 and we had a ice/sleet storm 12/23. The difference was night & day. This applied to not only going forward, but lateral stability increased in an impressive manner.

Obviously I have no wear history yet, but winter tires general do not last long in higher temps. BUt if you are looking for a winter only tire, even for the family hauler minivan, I'd give these Blizzaks a try.
