How efective is the high lift jack as a recovery / winch? I know it can be great to lift up the vehicle to somehow get more traction under the tire, but what about just to tug you out? They seem to be rated plenty to tug a KJ, but if I am in mud and not moving, how much sweat and tears are involved in tugging out that kj with only a high lift... assuming you are in neutral :)

How strong are you? Your going to get a workout you'll never want to do again and it could take several hours using a HiLift to get yourself extracted from a mudpit, even if you ever get yourself out.Bring another vehicle(always should have at least 2 vehicles when offroad) or get a winch.

Why we are on the subject...

Farm and Fleet sells a "farm & fleet" brand hi lift on sale for $ 39.00.

Good to get or stay away and go name brand :?:

I have used a Hi Lift as a winch with the winching kit that they sell to go with it and it still took me about 3 hours to move it about 8 feet. I did get unstuck though. OH yea and it wasn't even mud. It was loose sand and gravel. I got it up on some planking that I found and got a bit of speed coming off the planking to stay on top. My arms were so tired that I had trouble steering at first. If it had been mud, it would have been MUCH more difficult to move.

As for the off brand jacks, you could go with a Smittybuilt, but they would cost you as much as a Hi Lift. The other cheaper brands are just not built as well. I will go cheap on some things, but if I am going to rely on something for recovery, I want to be sure it's going to work when I am out in the middle of nowhere.
