Any help would be appreciated here!

A couple months ago my wife's 06 CRD (27,000 miles) had the CEL come on. I just bought a code reader and P0299 and P0401 showed up. After reading through the threads it looks like the EGR has failed. I'm pretty green at this kind of stuff so please bare with me. I have a friend that is a diesel mechanic that might be able to help me out with this. How long would it take to change this if you're an experienced diesel mechanic?

I also read about the SEGR mod. Is this a good way to go? From what I understand, the SEGR by passes the EGR all together? Is there a down side to the SEGR ? Where can I buy the SEGR modification? I don't have any warranty on this rig, as I purchased it in the U.S and Chrysler Canada will not honour any warranty up here. It would also be nice to have this issue never come back!

At times I notice when I accelerate, (from almost a stop / coasting) I get a large amount of turbo lag followed by a large amount of black soot out the tail pipe. Is this the result of the turbo under boost (P0299)?

Thanks very much!
Matt

I have a gutted cat,SEGRed,CRD that goes great.Along with a Edge Programmer, and non restrictive muffler My issues are long gone.My Regular diesel mechanic did the SEGR install in three hours +-.I think these mods completed the rig as it should have come from the factory.I also burn WVO in my CRD and this cuts down emissions big time........................H

That sounds like a really good way to go! Did you take the factory cat and empty it out? How do you avoid the check engine lights sensors etc?

Where can I buy an SEGR? To be honest....I wouldn't know a SEGR if it hit me in the side of the head! Or how it works!

Would I still need to replace my broken EGR with a new one to do the SEGR modification?

Thanks!
Matt

An SEGR is a device that the LocoCRD designed and people build themselves. UFO might have one already built that you can buy, I'm sure he will let you know if he has one. If your EGR is stuck in the open position you should replace it. Your check engine light would probably go off with the SEGR but would not help if the EGR is stuck open. Basically an SEGR keeps the EGR closed all the time but tells the computer that it is working properly. It lowers intake temps and keeps soot from being turned into sludge in the intake. I have noticed an increase in MPG also, but I can't speak for everyone who has one. It can be a little pricey but it was well worth it for me. The kit is around $100 and UFO builds them for Around $200 give or take.

One thing that can cause black smoke and turbo lag is a blown boost hose, that would be the first thing I would check. If one is blown you can get SAMCO hoses or stock ones from the dealer.

This sounds like a blown boost hose, remove them and inspect for rips/bursts.

Considering that the original motivation for designing it (way back when) was for us to get rid of the CEL that came on when doing the "ORM" :)

That is why there is a bypass plug that is included so you can take the SEGR off and have everything run as designed for driving on road.

Many thanks to LocoCRD and UFO (and others) for building the SEGR’s for all of you. It was with the help of many here that I was able to design the SEGR. What happened next was just exactly what I wanted to happen. By freely releasing the design of the SEGR, you fellow CRD owners didn’t get screwed by someone selling you a “Black Box” for lots of $$$$. This way anyone can take the design and build it, or have someone build it for them because the information is not locked up.

I just wanted to say that because of the help here, what goes around, comes around. We all benefit by sharing info.

By the way, the original SEGR has over 40K miles on it now, working perfectly, never a problem. I did remove the factory cat and muffler together and placed them in the corner of my garage for possible future use. I then replaced the cat with a hollowed-out replacement cat (see straight through it) and used a Flowmaster muffler in place of all the factory stuff. Put on a SP Diesel performance module (Don’t buy, no customer support for this device for the money) and the little CRD runs GREAT! (Of course, for off road use only).

Mileage is around 23 – 25 because I drive it like I just stole it. I just love tearing up those big chipped trucks!

Do the SEGR mod and be happy.

The SEGR allows you to tune the CRD the way you want too without any annoying lights coming on.I too have seen better MPG with it and yes I hollowed my stock cat(did ya know you can get alot of $ for the stuff inside palladuim),as well as the closest thing to a walker BTM I could find in my size muffler($75 @ napa).I see more power with SEGR,so be careful of the TQ(suncoast has a nice upgrade that next on my list)......................FREE and greasy down the road I go...............H

Thanks for all the responses!

If I could buy a SEGR, that would be great.

So because my CEL is on and showing a code, I assume that my EGR is stuck open and I will still have to buy a new EGR anyway......Is this correct? I then purchase the SEGR and make the modification? Do I look up UFO on this site and see if has an SEGR available ?

Sorry for all the questions.....not very mechanically inclined :/

I will check the hoses on the turbo and see if I can see anything (turbo lag - smoke).

All the thanks go to TurboTim for designing this great mod. If there is enough interest to warrant another run I'm game. Thanks again Tim, my Jeep and I are much happier with this little gadget installed.

Mmmmnnnnn i think i need to report you guys to your local emissions officer, gutting cats and stuff, you guys must carry around a lot of parts in your Jeeps for OFF ROAD use, imagine fitting a new exhaust everytime you go off road

I justtook the electrical connect off the egr and let it soak in a solvent for a couple days. Then started at intercooler toward engine cleaning out all the gunk, and then installed SEGR.It will take some time to clean but those parts are too much $$$$ just too throw away when dirty. As for OFF-ROAD use I live in NH,"LIVE FREE OR DIE" is a way of life, and As long as I don't have a CEL I get a purty new sticker every year.....The WVO does help with the emissions end of the Inspection. My CRD is cleaner on WVO with all my mods, and chipped out, then a stock CRD.....H

Up here in the North driving on any road is an off road adventure, pot holes, water over the road, snow two tracks. Does that make SEGR legal :?: :?:

Perhaps your EGR valve is stuck in the open position due to excess crap and not a faulty solenoid. You may be able to remove the EGR and clean all the crap out of it and then fit your SEGR.

Some of the members may PM you with another way of doing it without using a SEGR.

Okay, I would like to go ahead with this SEGR modification. I pm'd UFO and I haven't heard back yet. Is there anyone else that sells the SEGR? I will probably be coming back to this thread with lots of question about the install. :?
