When I have the kj moving and the heat on hot air will come out of the vents ( as it should ). When the vehicle is no longer in motion cold air starts blowing from the vents almost as if I turned the thermostat dial from warm air all the way to cold.
Is the thermostat starting to die?

Check your coolant level, you probably have a crack radiator.

A bad t-stat you either will never heat up(stuck open) or overheat(stuck closed).

How often do people replace their thermostat?

I'm flip-flopping over swapping mine out lately

Does that mean I fall into a 2% catagory that replaces a functional part with another functional part?

I've gotten into that habit too with this KJ. There's a bunch of things I have replaced that were still working: battery, headlight and foglight bulbs, rad hoses, thermostat, fan belt. Even the OE tires had a lot of tread on them. Funny about those, though, the tire shop instinctively knew to throw them out when they put my new tires on, didn't even ask me if I wanted them...
For me the reason is simple: less chance of breaking down when it's really cold. In my experience, if a thermostat is going to quit, it'll wait for a nasty cold day when you're out of town a few miles to do it.
I remember Rush 345 posted a link once about thermostats that will default to open when they fail (at least then you can make it home), does anyone remember that?

Going to replace my thermostat soon with this one.

http://www.motoradusa.com/products/index.html

It fails in the open position so it doesn't overheat.
