Darn Ice! :(

We are getting some sleet and snow tonight, they say about 1" tonight and then another 2" tomorrow, so I decided that I would make a quick cruise around town tonight. So I started the KJ and then went to scraping all of the current ice off of my KJ and when I started the KJ I went ahead and turned on the heater and defroster. Once I finished scraping the ice off I started driving and I drive 4 blocks and then I hear this crash sound, so I look around and my rear tailgate window had shattered! So I pulled off the road as soon as I could to assess the damages, well it was completely gone, so I called a friend that goes to the same school and asked if he knew anyone with a garage I could barrow, and luckily his gf had one that she doesnt use so I wont have a KJ full of ice and snow tomorrow. But now I have to find a new rear window asap and get it replaced.

and to make it all worse I had my LOST Lifetime sticker and the Great Plains sticker on there so I also lost both of them!! :evil:

sorry I was just wanting to rant a little since Im really mad that it happened but a little relieved that I was able to find a place to store it out of the snow and ice.

My dad's Exploder did the same thing when it was 6 months old.

Cold can F some glass up!

my guess is that the glass was still cold and the rear defroster heated it too quickly and it busted. thats how I broke my front passenger side window, except I was welding

yeah I will probably end up calling some tomorrow, but there wasnt any close by, the closest was 145 miles away and was charging $250 lol

I dont know I dont remember now but I dont think I turned it on right away but I may have. I can tell you that when I get it replaced Im gonna be weary of it now lol

5 degrees and I used the Defroster. Rear window covered with chunks of ice all over it.

I'm thinking your rear flexed or pressure placed on it after you hit a bump or pothole and that caused it.

Is it possible that the rear gate wasnt closed all the way and the glass was latched? That would put a lot of stress on the glass.

Either way, that sucks dude. Now that I think about it, the same thing happened to a buddy of mine in his 93xj a couple years ago. From what I remember it wasnt that cold but he had just gotten in his xj to leave a foot ball game. He had some buddies with him and when they closed their door it just shattered and fell out.

no it was closed all the way bc I hit the open tailgate on the remote to get the connector off after it broke

I spent a couple hours this morning calling around for a new rear window and got estimates ranging from $250-650! I ended up making a trip ot Joplin and getting it installed for $250 But I was blown away that someone would charge you $650 for the thing :shock:
