I don't know... I did the exact same thing with our Liberty just before Christmas - most of the pictures of the snow height, etc. could be from our "adventure". I will agree that better tires would have helped, but I don't know if it would have made THAT much difference. What might have really helped would have been more ground clearance. As mentioned, the Jeep acted like a scraper and was packing down snow as I drove. Maybe I'm crazy, but I think the packed snow helped get the tires up just enough that they didn't get all the traction they could have/should have. I do know that even when all 4 tires were completely free - front, back, and sides - it still didn't move. And that was in 4Lo. Nothing helped until we shoved out enough snow from the undercarriage.

So I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the limitation of the Liberty as far as snow goes. But when I get around to buying new tires I'll see if that changes my opinion.

Im telling you those crap years are junk, but I will say that in some conditions, tires are not going to help. I myself have not had enough snow to play around in. It was 63 yesterday 8)

but if we get some good snow (like more than a foot  ), I will let you know how mine does

New tires would make a huge difference. I was in snow deeper than that on some dirt roads up here in Decemeber and I had no problems getting around. The snow was so deep that the skid plates were even leaving depressions in the snow.

The Goodyear SR-As on my Mother's Jeep were good on paved roads in the snow we had, but they would not have made it through some of the roads I was on.

That is one great looking cabin in a great looking location.

Thanks, man. Yeah, I'm pretty curious to see if there is any improvement after lift and tires. In the end, this trip swayed me to thinking about an ARB locker as well (although I'm not sure where I'd see the most benefit with the Selec-Trac...front vs. rear...opinions please!).

I was on the fence as to whether or not I wanted to wheel my Jeep on the land during the spring and summer...but I'm pretty confident I'll have some fun with it after adding those aftermarket items. Worse comes to worse, I've got to take a 30-45 minute walk out of the woods and a 30 minute ride back in with the Kabota and chains to pull myself out of mud...At least I'll have some good pics to add to this site.

Good grief....I bet a brand new snowmobile would cost less than a set of those bad boys.

beautiful place!

My findings:

I do a lot of skiing off Berthoud pass here and that involves driving into and out of deep pulloffs that are full of plowed off snow. My last vehicle was a 97 4x4 F250 diesel w/ manual trans so going to the jeep has been a big change for me and it took a number of tries to get a workable system (it will stink the clutch if I don’t use 4lo). In the end, the jeep (with AT tires but no lift, yet) is good for about 60% of what the pickup would do, which is pretty good.

1. tires, tires, tires, tires! They make a HUGE difference. It’s not possible to overstate this.
2. ESP – the esp will not allow you to grind the wheels like you have to, even in 4hi it’ll do it’s auto take control bs.
3. I’m pretty sure that the terrible noise you hear is the ABS valve, mine makes that noise w/o any of the fancy trac control stuff and in 4lo (when the ESP is totally disabled).
4. 4lo and just grind them tires, keep em moving (but don’t spin at high speed). Last week I pushed through a fully knee high plow mound into a foot of plow debris successfully this way.
5. A workable deep snow system: use your momentum to go a ways (10-20’) back off and then redo a section immediately right or left (eg: tire packing a new track immediately adjacent) of that section, back off and redo till you get where you’re going. Always make sure to back to a safe spot that you've cleared before.
6. I keep a pair of V-bars just in case, they fit on the rear (haven’t tried the front) but juuuuust barely. I guarantee that if you’d put those on you’d have been fine. SRAs or not ;)

In the end, this and the constant rock banging/dragging are what’ll force me into a lift I’m just hopeful that the 2.5” will suffice (I think it will).

if you install just 1 locker its always in the rear first selec track or not. You need a locker the most when climbing up hill and in that situation the weight will transfer to the rear wheels. also it is less expensive $$ to install the rear locker because the front is more complicated to install

Little update........Went to the camp again this weekend. Bottom line: Got about 100 ft. from the house and was so bogged down that I needed to fire up the Kabota for a tow out of the snow! Hahaha...my first tow, and it was by a farm tractor. Pics to come.

I work as a broadcast radio engineer. Some of our transmitter sites are located in some rough locations.

A few years back, I had to go to one of our transmitter sites right after a winter storm. It appeared that someone had plowed the road up to the gate of the site.

I had a 1997 Kia Sportage at the time. After going through the gate and turning toward the site, I noticed that the snow was getting deeper and deeper... pretty soon, it was pushing up over the hood of the little Sportage.

I just kept going and the snow kept pushing up over the hood, and not too much further, the Sportage came to a stop. It had pushed itself up on top of the snow like you are talking about.

I got out and looked and all 4 wheels were off the ground.

Nothing we tried would get us out of there, we tried forward, backward, pushing, pulling, nothing worked. We even tried digging without any luck.

Pretty soon, we finally figured out, if we just left the car idling, the exhaust would melt the snow. Sure enough, after about 30 minutes, the exhaust heat had melted the snow enough to get the wheels back on the ground and I was able to back up back to the gate where the road was plowed.

We ended up walking to the transmitter site from the gate
