Putting an aftermarket CCV filter in the system is a good proventative step but what about the existing oil contamination. Has anyone tried flushing the old oil out of their intercooler? The CAC hoses are easy to clean but what about the intercooler?[/quote]

Having been a previous owner of a TDI VW, the intercooler can be cleaned out with an engine cleaner. The most important part is to make sure you flush it out with water very well. I haven't done it in about 4 years so someone with more recent experiance could help out better.

Thanks for the input, I would have thought straight diesel fuel would be the cleaner of choice. I guess you may need something more caustic to break up the sludge. anyone else?

Happy New Year. Anyone else have any suggestions on how to drain the CRD innercooler of the oil? I don't want to remove the unit because it looks like I have to also remove the AC condessor which means a dump and pump of the refridgerant. Not my idea of a good $$ move.

Well, my gut reaction would be to not worry about it. Assuming you've installed the provent (or whatever CCV filter) w/ less than 20k miles or so I wouldn't stress about it. Oldnavy can chime in here but the VW TDi guys typically don't have any noticeable performance degredation until like 80k miles. The little amount you have in there shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Not to mention the only way to REALLY clean it is to remove it and run tons of engine degreaser through it (and the intake manifold). Expensive and nasty. Could do some searches for VW TDi's and intercooler cleaning if you want more info.

If just cleaning the intercooler and hose, but not intake then just plain soap & water flush after the diesel fuel solvent cleaning. But that's for a really gunked up intercooler, I would not really worry about it this soon.

There were a couple of the TDI guys that put radiator drains in the incoolers, not sure if I would do that unless I was not going to do a CCV filter of some kind..

Jeepster or anybody else flushed their CAC without removing it from the crd? 20k miles of 0w40 , I'm guessing a pint to a quart of sludge.
