Better dig that spare out of the bin then...If they're rare......
I think the only way the 235/70/16 will fit is if I do a spring over.
As it sits now, the drawbar is angled upwards towards the towbar, so the spring over should get it flat, but with those bigger tyres, it may start to point down...
Thanks for your offer of help, I should know next week If I need to relocate the guards, I don't think I need too much clearance, I can't imagine all those springs moving up and down a helluva lot.

Well,
Put my order in for the new axle today, took the kj steelie down there with tyre on, to make sure the backspace and clearance measurements were just right.
And we did a test fit on those 5stud Ford hubs, they fit perfectly.
So early next week I should be taking delivery of the new axle.
In the meantime, more prep work on the body, getting it ready for paint.

Had a good morning with the trailer.
Managed to re-locate the mudguards about 50mm higher.
Did a bit of panel beating, and rust repair.
Mounted the spare and the jockey wheel, and even had time for a test paint.

The mudguards, now hard up against the body lip.

The Spare mounted...looks funny with those little 13's

Even with the short drawbar, access is good to the back of the KJ.

A wee bit of paint.

So, got the secondhand tyres from Fourby's this morning.
They are the Wrangler S4's that came stock on the KJ, which is nice, all 3 wheels and tyres now match, good price too, the pair, fitted, $70...bargain
Finally got around to doing a test fit to check guard clearance, and it should be ok without doing a spring over.
But I can see myself needing to do some el-cheapo flares, cause the tyres will stick out from the guards, maybe some black poly garden edging from Bunnings?
Or I'll need to find some fancy rubber molding like the pic below.
Saturday will be starting on the underbody paint, and hopefully Monday, will start fitting the new axle if it's ready.

Coming along nicely, I think you will have trouble fitting that flare rubber to those guards with the lip the way it is, I have used that type of rubber flare before and found that they sag where they are flat accross the top if you don't use a bit of metal re-enforcing sica-flexed underneath.

Yeah mate, I've heard about the sag too, but as you can see in the cross section, there is a length of wire that now runs the full length of the flares to stop the sag.
I will probably also need to chop the lip on those guards to A: Be able to fit the flares and B: Stop the lip slicing into the tyre under compression.
I know this may weaken the guards, so maybe some cross bracing on top of the guards will be in order.

Anyway, the fun continues.......

i didnt know there was a 6am on a saturday morning

actually i do , i have a little person that wakes us up between 5.30 and 6.00 every day of the year :cry:

So today,
Got stuck into the paint, the plan was to paint the underbelly of the trailer, but I got carried away and finished the whole thing.
Used a Chassis paint for all the heavy metal, went on easy with a brush, and gave a nice thick gloss finish.
For the exterior, used a blue hammer finish paint...though the hammer finish is never quite like it looks on the can :roll:

So now, bit buggered, but very happy with the result, won't win any concourse d' elegance awards, but that's fine with me, it's more of a rat rod than a roller.
Got the call on Friday that the axle is ready first thing Monday, so will try and duck out of work to pick it up, and hopefully get that bolted in on Tues or Wednesday, believe me, I can't wait for that!!
It's going to be a little MONSTER :twisted:

Well Lads,
Just picked up the axle / hub assembly.
Original was a 39mm Round, went with the 40mm Sqr, rated for 1.8T, overkill I know.
So now the question remains..>WILL IT FIT.
Geez I hope I measured it right, I guess tomorrow will tell :roll:

Quite a day, I won't bore you with the details, suffice to say the axle mob f#$%ed up when they measured the backspace on the wheels.
So didn't get my proper axle till 3.30 this arvo...bit of a setback.
In the mean time, busied myself with a few of the smaller jobs.
When I did get the new axle back, it was a quick job to drop it it.
The track is only about 40-50 mm narrower than the KJ.
Took it for a test drive round the block, and it was a bit bouncy, the gauge showed 36psi, so I knocked it back to 17psi, which was much better, might even go a bit less.
Very happy with the result, still have a couple of minor jobs, but for the best part it's ready for rego. :lol:

mate that looks Puurrrdddyy. I saw a thing on 4WD action DVD about getting your tyre's to float
the same as the 4WD . They got 2 ruler's to measure the foot print and let the trailer's pressure
down to the same footprint. Maybe useless information but you now I'm full of that stuff.
