I was about to check/change my rear differential fluid and notice a leak. I’m not sure where the leak is coming from, is it the rear pinion seal? How easy is it to fix?

one, make sure your vent isn't plugged

to pull the pinion flange you're gonna need a puller, or fabricate one

a socket for the nut, a torque bar, you'd have to check a jeep torque spec sheet but most of them are around 135-150ft/lbs

you also need a stick of chalk to mark the pinion and flange so that you get it back in the same way it was

you can use a socket that is slightly smaller than the max diameter of the seal to gently seat the seal evenly into place

if the housing has a seal lip you seat the seal to the lip if it doesnt you seat it flush with the housing, as with any sealed surface don't scratch the housing

no impact tools

definatly looks like your pinion seals blowin oil though

mine did that a little too but I think its stopped. but if its the pinion seal its gonna suck bc youll have to pull the carrier and itll be expensive, you might as well as regear if you have to replace it

woah woah woah, you sayin you have to pull the carrier to replace the pinion seals on our axles? I can't say i've ever pulled a carrier to replace a pinion seal! but I suppose if the seal is on the other side of the housing for some reason then um.. that's ignorant on behalf of chrysler

you're absolutley sure about pulling the carrier for the pinion seal??

i'm not 100% questioning you but.. wow i wouldn't think any manu would do that

I thought but I very well might be wrong, I hope I am but I thought thats what my gear buy said, I probably just mis-interpreted what he said

i just got curious and looked it up in the service manual for the libbys

no carrier removal, it does have entries for removing tires and brake drums and recording the rotating torque of the pinion prior to removal and instillation of the new seal

lists pinion yolk nut torque of 210 ft/lbs

add 5 ft/lbs until rotating torque is the same as it was prior, but less than 210 is unacceptable

also forgot to check that it rotates uniformly, if it doesn't it typically signifys that the gears are binding

perhaps your gear guy was refering to removing the pinion itself?

I don't particularly recall removing wheels and drums when doing it, i would put the truck on stands though and back the brakes off, it was pretty hard to screw up on those beasts though, as long as you mark the pinion with the flange and get it back on like it was and don't use an impact gun it shouldn't misalign anything what so ever under any circumstance.

oh, one other thing, a 3 foot prybar or big crow bar or a piece of steel stock or a jackhandle can double as a yolk holder when removing or torquing, it may be beneficial to have an extra set of hands however

Thanks a lot for the help guys. I thinkg I have all the tools including a torque wrench. Is the seal a dealer item? And what size socket will I need to remove the nut holding the seal?

ah jeeze, i think its metric, try a 28mm or maybe a 1 1/8th in 6 point

99.9% sure it's over 1 inch

i think the 8.25 chrysler has same pinion nut as a Dana 30 but i could be wrong

pretty sure napa and advance both carry the seal, afterall it's just a seal and it's just a 8.25 chrysler which is a common diffy

btw a good pipe wrench doubles as a yoke holder, and a pully puller can double as a yolk puller as well, yokes usually come off pretty easy unless theyve been on there eons

D30's is significantly smaller, IIRC.

Well...

I've got both sitting on my toolbox. One is significantly smaller than the other

my rear isn't leaking yet though...the front is (typical Dana  but at least we don't have AAM axles...)

we're all glad your rear isn't leaking TBird

the 8.25 nut may be as large as a 36mm but i don't think there is 'that' much difference in the two

if you're going to have to buy a socket i'd suggest going to napa or whoever, asking them to get the replacement pinion nut / collapsable washer so that you can try the nut out on a few of their sockets and then that way you won;t have to make two trips

i think the nut/washer replacement kit is about 30 bucks but you wouldn't have to buy it to try the nut on a socket

tbird if both are on your tool box tell us the size of both of them, the 28mm 1 1/8th is the dana nut most likley hehe

Any luck on this? I want to make sure I have everything I need before I start to take things apart. Greatly appreciated guys.

quickest way to find out would prob be to call napa / advance, ask them if they have the nut/washer replacement kit, when they tell you yes, say great, get the nut and go stick it in the sockets you have on the socket wall until you find the one it fits and tell me what size it is hehehe

The pinion SEALS are on my toolbox, not the nuts;)

Ohhhh, i see! I thought you had replaced the nut's when you replaced seals and just chunked them ontop of the toolbox.

I do stuff like that alot. There's a bottle coil for a 79 grenada on mine and that car went to the junk yard in 95, there's also a wankel flywheel under it along with the bar that goes with it, i use that to stub my toe
