Jarhead (the movie)

So I got Jarhead out the other day.. what a stressfull movie. I know there are a lot of army people on lost so I was wondering what you guy's thought of the movie.

What did you find stressful about it ? What is it you want to know? I thought the movie was ok, I saw some stuff in the movie that I have experienced while serving with the Marines and in Theater over seas. And a lot of it was Hollywood mumbo jumbo.

ya, it was mostly mumbo jumbo, however, the overall concept of it was kinda accurate depending on when and where you served

the whole deal of the pranks and overall juvenile behavior.. 100% accurate for the most part :lol:

the movie sparked alot of reminiscing and storys and laughter for me, FMJ is still my favorite Marine movie

it didn't help that even the new PI barracks don't really look a bit different than the old ones on the inside, probably the same racks for the past 100 years :lol:

the sas/sasr aussies that I knew liked to cut up and prank just as much as we did, their sense of humor on the other hand didn't seem to be nearly as vulgar as our american sense of humors :lol:

FMJ- yea, i can't stand to watch that one detective show on tv because the chunky monkey from FMJ is in it

Well I kind of expected it to be a movie like all other movies, gun's going off, bombs, action... etc. But it seemed more like a real movie (but with actors).... they simply got there and waited... waited... waited then told to go home. When they got to the point that they could fire their guns I really wanted them to do it.. but they were told no. It was like being told to stop when you’re at the vinegar stroke. All up I enjoyed the movie as it seemed so real but as it's a movie you just don't know.

What do I want to know... is that what happened. Sitting and waiting.. to only be told to go home with little to no action (not that that's a bad thing, just not what I expected).

politics of the first gulf war

politics of spending a few trillion on really expensive bombs vs utilizing inserted ground troops

avoiding what OIF was in comparason to the first gulf war

there were plenty of ground units that got utilized during the first gulf war but not on the scale of what OIF became, completely different ground strategy and completely different politics

same sort of stuff happened at the beginning of OIF, friend of mine was on the saipan just off the coast of iraq when I went in on first deployment

he sat there on the ship the entire deployment, by the time he got back to the states, i was already leaving Rota spain to go back for my 2nd deployment

Can't say anything about the first gulf war since I was like 14 at the time but in '98 when I was in the Marines stationed in Okinawa,Japan and with 3/12th marines(artillery) we sat on the runway in Kadina AFB for 6 hours.We all thought it wasd another readiness drill(had them all the time) but it got real when they started loading the Howitzers in the C5 and started handing out live ammo.That was when Saddam wouldn't let the UN inspectors in,we where on the verge of going back in but he let the UN in at the last moment and we where stood down.Talk about being scared,thought it was just another training drill with no info then just like nothing handing out ammo telling us we are going to Iraq,that was pretty hard on me when I was 19.The realization of actually going into battle is rather nerve racking,at least that experience helped out alot when I actually did go to Iraq in '03 for OIF I.

tj, 3/12 in 98, know a dude named Farrell? irish fella joined the Corps to get citizenship, woulda been a pfc or lcpl, real hard core arty fella, great guy to boot

i know he was in 3/12 at some point between 97 and 00

Doesn't ring a bell.3/12 was actually scattered between Okinawa,Camp Pendleton,and Camp Lejeune,.They rotated every 6 months to Okinawa since that is where the main HQ was.I was mechanic for HQ company so I was there for the full 1 year and did not get to see the whole battalion.

It was fun messing with the arty guy's though,not the brightest bulbs in the box and easy to fool :lol:

,"pull string,big gun go boom" :lol:

.Gotta hand it to them they could sling that 16,000lbs Howitzer like no tomorrow and through those 98lbs rounds all day long.I think they got somewhat smart that I was messing with them and one night on a training op at Camp Fugi(at the base of MT Fugi,Japan) I was nice and asleep in my HMMWV and they decided to do a "Hip Shoot" about 30 feet from me sleeping,had a nice black and blue mark on my forehead after hitting it on the rollbar.That 155mm Howitzer's are rather loud,shake the ground pretty good also.It's amazing to watch a whole battalion fire at the same time at night after the call "Fire for effect" is called :shock:

lol yea tot's are definatly impressive , now that i think of it i dont remember him mentioning oki when i met him, he was probably at pendleton

only time i was really around oki was for sere and a short 2 or 3 week workup with some stinger gunners at NTC

i did get to do some poncho hanggliding during a typhoon though :lol:

Sitting and waiting? Been there, done that.

I am a Operation Desert Shield/Storm veteran who was with U.S. Army 2nd Armored Division - 1st "Tiger" Brigade (Gunner M1A1 Abrams Tank). We were deployed to Saudi Arabia on 10Oct1990.

But we didn't just go home. We sat awaiting orders to take back Kuwait until 24February1991 Actually, we were in the gate the night of 23Feb. Along with 2d Marine (MEF) Division, 6th & 8th Regiments (Armored). 1st "Tiger" Brigade stormed into Kuwait crossing two belts of minefields, 12' ft high sand berms, booby traps and fire trenches all while under attack by enemy artillery, motar and small arms fire. By the end of the first day, we took over 5,000 EPW's. Within 4 days we destroyed 181 enemy tanks, 148 armored personnel carriers, 40 artillery guns and 27 antiaircraft systems. The bad guys lost 263 troops. Our cost was 2 KIA, 5 wounded.

As for the movie, "The Jarhead", I've never seen it.

Jarhead is Marines.

As far as the movie goes. I never watched it. I was on restriction the day it came out. Then I kind of forgot about it.

On a side note, any LAV guys in here? Just curious. The older the better.
My father in law was Marine LAV.
