Tonight whilst driving up to Mackay my drive line has developed a 'clunk' which you can also feel slightly while cruising along at all speeds on the straight as well as on curves, it feels like a chain jumping a sprocket, or a Detroit locker clunking when cornering, you get the picture! I have DTT's fitted that are a gear drive LSD. I tried it in "4WD full time' and still the same. It might do it a few times in a hundred meters then not do it for a few K's. I pulled up a few times and had a look see underneath and see nothing unusual, I feel nothing unusual, uni's, diffs etc all feel normal, no hot spots or play anywhere.
Any suggestions??

sound's like a funny one, seeing as have checked the usual suspect's it could binding in diff's or transfer case.
Does it seem to happening more front or rear? Toyota's I have owned prevoiusly with locking hub's would bind
transfer case gears if left in 4WD on bitumen and make a bad clunk to free itself.

I know it sounds strange, but, has one of the tyres delaminated??? is there any irregular bubbles or bumps in one of the treads....

Clunks are bad, I suppose the only way to really know is to pull off the diff covers and have a look. Maybe, just drain the oil and look for metal shavings???

Also, just double cheak the tension on the bolts for the driveshafts, I have heard of them coming loose, causing an intermitant clunk.

I was experiencing some unexplanable clunks from the rear end. Checked the tyre pressures, too hard maybe @40psi as recommended by MT on road or scaring of the rubber from the Flinders & Gawler ranges trip maybe effecting their normal performance. However, on inspection under the hoist we discovered that the rear driveshaft bolts had come VERY VERY loose. Thus the Clunk!!!

I am also experiencing a minor "knock" in the drivers side CV boot?

From memory even Stu had the rear driveshaft bolts come loose...

Thats no good if it is clunking Greg. Is this all the time, or just when turning. Another thing to consider is that the CV is 7 years old, and has done some miles, so it could also be just simply wearing out as they do.

Yeah, possibly just wear as you say. But until you take the boot off to see the inner workings you just don't know. However it is only minor at this stage. I'll just keep a watch on for a while.

MY sway bar links were loose and made it clunk and thunk pretty bad, sounded like the front end falling off when I went over a dip. Might want to double check them, especially if you had them off to mess with your lift.

That little clunk developed a bit further to the point where I recon it was coming from the trany so off to the jeep place and got a trany filter and some ATF+4 oil so I could drop the oil and have a look at it, it was almost due for a change anyway, when I went to leave the dealer I could not get reverse at first but ofter a few attempts it selected and away I went, then each time it was changing down gears it would let out a blood curdling whirring noise and the clunks become bangs, just made it up the drive, changed the oil and filter and had a good look around, the filter was clean as a whistle and only a very little sludge on the magnet, no more than usual, took it for a drive after it selected reverse first try but alas, only just got it home, so its a tow truck to a trany specialist when I can organise it. BUGGAR BUGGAR BUGGAR.
To make me feel better I went and ordered a Grand Cherokee Lorado diesel with off road pack (skids, quadra drive, roof basket, rock rails), tow pack, electronoc rust protection.

G Mud that's horrible. I've had that happen to me in a previous vehicle (hate to admit it - a Ford Explorer I bought second hand as a tow vehicle). That chainsaw like buzzing and loss of drive. Hopefully its just a solenoid or two in the valve body.

Also great news on the Laredo CRD, go the diesels. Nice engine in that Grand. That is some way to cheer yourself up! We'll need some pics.

The solenoid pack contains several electrically controlled solenoids that redirect the fluid to the appropriate clutch pack or servo in order to control shifting.
, if you need a torque converter i have a low K spare in the garage

Where do I find out which trany I have?, I thought it was a 45rfe but looking at an exploded view of one I have a different pan filter to that shown on there.
